Let's take a fresh look at this, The Original show was not even completed. But it had aquired it's VDF that when AIC decided to look at making remakes they chose Bubblegum Crisis to be one of it projects.

There been many arguements that the characts revamps in 2040 and completely unralated plot line to the original screwed up the BGC chances of a seacond season. Has there been any fresh news regarding Bubblegum Crisis 2041? Nope not That I've heard of....

So your views, comments and ideas on this aged old agrument are welcome.....

Although I haven't watched the original as much as I did for 2040, I have to say the music in the OVA's were much better than the majority of cyberpunk in 2040. "Wasurenaide" was a great 80's electro ballad and so was "Never The End". That's not to mention the other great song "Say Yes".

What I'm curious to see is the mention of Bubblegum Crash! I know that many have said it didn't even feel or fit into the Bubblegum Crisis world but after watching it, it didn't seem as bad as many have said. The music in it was just as good as the ones in the OVA's and the plot...ok the plot wasn't up to par with the ones in the original but it did seem like it paved the way for the 2040 storyline.

I really do wish that the BGC OVA had been completed, I've been thinking about this a lot and it seems to me that it was all up to the last episode. That's where all of it would come together, why we were shown all those different events, how those events would play through and come to this one final conclusion and come together.

At least that's how I think it was meant to have been done, or at least that's how I would do it... too bad, cause those kinda endings rock, cause then you go back and really pay attention to the other episodes.

I would rather Priss had died in that episode cause then it'd totally drag Leon further into the heart of the conspiracy involving Genom. He'd become a hellova lot more important to the plot and he'd become one of the key figures that would take down Genom. His motivation is obvious if the events did occur that way.

Well what if they took 2041 in a completely direction?

Full Metal panic had its 26 standard episodes of violence and ?oh noes not the bad guy!? theme to it and after that they made Full metal Panic? Fumoffu which was like 14 episodes (I think) was mainly about the mishaps between the two main characters and was in short, a romantic comedy. In fact, this was more popular than the original series.

Since each of the knight sabers sorta had ties with another guy (you know what I mean.) perhaps they could totally redo the plot in the same fashion that FMP did.

Who knows, maybe it wont suck.

An OAV remake would be incredible, especially if the artwork, music and plot were as good as the original series', but I wouldn't argue with a slight update of the character designs. Preferred 2040's character designs (except for Sylia).

Don't think 2041 is ever going to happen. It's been too long since anything was done with the franchise and if they couldn't attract enough support when 2040 was fresh off the press, I don't see them getting it now.

Doesn't mean that a re-remake won't happen lol. Just look at the time gap between the OVA and 2040, that's not to mention all the bubblegum crisis universe related series in-between those two like Bubblegum Crash, Scramble Wars, AD Police TV and supposedly Parasite Dolls was in development during the time 2040 was about to come out.

Crash was made to tie up the loose ends of the OVA series but because it was made by a different company and they had a new voice actress for Priss, it didn't really have the same feel as the OVA nor did the plot really tie in with it.

It's hard for me to decide the between the two series but if there's any differences between the two(other than the character designs) is that the OVA was not completed due to unforseen circumstances and it took Crash to finish it and the 2040 version was completed but with a cliffhanger ending of Priss' fate. The other thing is that OVA had the Knight Sabers doing paying jobs that were related to Genom and 2040 had the Knight Sabers doing in voomers and any hint of the jobs being requested by someone for the Knight Sabers was the scenes where Sylia contacting with a guy who looks like Fargo. The last thing is the Hardsuit designs, the OVA had the suits with bonfide military weapons that Knight Sabers use for real-life Special Ops., but the 2040 series eliminated them. Those I miss.

Orginal BGC for the mecha, hardsuit and boomer designs designs. I also found that the knight sabers had better group dynamics. Also REVENGE ROAD has to be my all time favorite BGC episode.

I think for me, it would it would be the BGC OVA, the animation is Miles better than BGC-2040. In some of BGC-2040 the animation would be choppy, still I love BGC-2040 and the overall atmosphere I think is much better than BGC OVA. I think the plot for BGC-2040 isn't as good as BGC OVA for lots of reasons. Not to mention the the hardsuits which could " change shape " in BGC-2040 sucked. So yeah, I guess it depends in what mood you are in .

I haven't actually seen 2040, although I have read spoilerific episode summaries, which only serve to reinforce the opinion of it being an exploitation of the original concept reconceived to market to a wider market.

As I'm not sure how long the intro and ending take up time wise I'm going to just deduct five minutes from total run time.

So 26*20 minutes each = 520 minutes.

OVA 1,5,6, and 8 are definitely 45 minutes long
OVA 2 & 3 are definitely 30 minutes long
I'm note sure on episode length of 4 & 7at the moment so I'm going to assume 30 minutes.

=> 260 minute long series, or approximately half the runtime of a normal half season.

Of these 1-3 & 4-6 continue with a developing plot. If Vision had been brought into the group as originally planned 7 would have effectively as well, although not continuing Mason's mechanations. Going by the interviews on the DVDs only the main characters and world were really fixed, with each director basically getting to setup their set of episodes and there wasn't a real master plan or dominating vision.

My main complaints with the original center around things where I suspect Sonada and the others weren't comunicating well. Thus we have Priss's motoslave carrying a big cannon in OVA 1, but it behaving like the lighter autocannon Linna used in OVA 3. Something they apparently got straightened out by OVA 5, when a similar cannon shows up. Of course, then they made a mistake with that in their attempt to overdramatize things. Namely Priss's Motoslave was reduced to scrap in OVA 5, and yet she has another Priss (Red) Motoslave in OVA 6 which serves no other purpose then to get her to Genom tower. Granted that by that point Sylia could have decided it was worthwhile to have a spare for Priss's Motoslave around.

If they'd just let the singer go instead of setting it up like they did, waiting to see whether she would otherwise have something else to do with her career, we could have Priss leave and Vision come in. Thus we could easily continue with Vision joining and becoming a part of the group in the next few episodes. Then proceed to wrap things up in what was left, preferably more by defining their role then deus exing Genom. Instead it kind of jumped the shark, and by Scoop Chase one of the directors had finally sunk low enough to break some of the principles that kept it higher making the Knight Sabers just the "good guys" vs the bad guys in their actions and ignoring various things.

After this Youmex and AIC broke up messing up this series among others. Youmex tried to continue it with Crash, but AIC sued cutting it down. From what I've read about Crash it wasn't really deserving as it abused the world and characters it was based on, and showed that no one by Sonada can apparently be trusted to design the hardsuits.

Recently AIC looks like it decided to make it's own bid. Take a successful cyberpunk series, burn off the solid stuff the Lowest Common Denominator doesn't really appreciate, reengineer what's left to appeal to a wider market in no small part by predigestion and ripping off other shows and apparently we get 2040. Something that looks more like the illegitimate child of El Hazard, Generator Gawl, and Evangelion then a sequel to Bubblegum Crisis.

If they remade BGC, in my opinion Sonada would absolutely have to be on the staff. Cannon God Exaxxion and Gunsmith Cats show he can handle the material in many ways as good if not better then anyone else. Plus, no one yet as far as I've seen has been able to treat his hardsuits right, but him. Also given Shinji Aramaki's work with Appleseed I think he should be brought back on project, with the associated staff, if such a project were ever undertaken. Not that I see that ever happening.

The thing is if you have actually watched Bubblegum Crash! you'll notice that many of 2040's story elements and sound effects comes from the root of it. This actually makes it look like 2040 is a remake of Crash more than the OVA.

Briareos, you sound pretty convinced of what you read. But maybe it would help if you watched Crash and 2040 (or a bit of it) to see what it's REALLY about, not just read other opinions. Make your own. I was and still am a die hard fan of classic BGC, but 2040... it's simply one of the best animes I've seen. You just cannot let them stand side by side and choose, they are too different for that. But what surprises me is how many people here suddenly dismiss 2040 and say that the original OVA concept was exploited / badly redone. I remember two years ago we had a lot of people at C3F saying that they liked 2040 over the OVA, or that both series should be treated with the same respect. And I'm still of that opinion... just stop comparing them.

Personally for me, 2040 had a better storyline and flow but some of the characters were too anal lol which is why to me I preferred some characters from the OVA than 2040, Leon being an example.

So basically both have their good and bad points.

Over watching it is not the main reason my opinion of BGC2040 has changed over the years. After all I've seen Evangelion, RahXephon, Macross and a whole bunch of other series in my collection more times over than I have watched BGC2040 and I still love them all.

What is Bubblegum Crisis? I mean what is the purpose of the ORIGINAL Bubblegum Crisis? It is a tribute to Blade Runner and cyberpunk. It was created by a group of people who wanted to explore that specific sub-genre and to also express their opinions of where they believed Japan was headed with its social and economic reforms. I believe the BGCOVA makes that very clear.

When I first saw Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, I had not seen any form of anime in a very long time. In the past when I was a kid I had seen shows such as Robotech, Astro Boy and Samurai Pizza Cats. The only reason I switched on the TV to watch BGC2040 when it was airing on SBS all those years ago was that I was EXTREMELY bored and there was this thing called "Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040" that was about to start in a couple of minutes. I took a chance, I loved it, but to be honest I liked it because I hadn't seen anything else to compare it to so as far as I knew, this was the best there was.

However, after some investigation I had heard that this series I had just seen was not the original and in addition to that there were other series out there which related to Bubblegum Crisis. At the time I had also started collecting anime DVDs. First BGC2040, then Gasaraki, then by luck I found AD Police TV (which I'll discuss later) and Evangelion and so on to this day where my DVD collection is around 300 DVDs and still growing. Of course I don't just watch the same kind of anime all the time. I make it a very clear effort to mix things up; I have my various Sci-Fi's and my comedies and romantic comedies; I also have adventures, animes which were made for a younger audience, ecchi, and so on.

It didn't take me long to realise that BGC2040 doesn't hold a candle to what a lot of these other animes have. I began to think, well BGC2040 is okay, but damn there are a lot of other series that were, to me, a lot better. But that's not what really pisses me off about BGC2040. I will be brutally honest here. BGC2040 is a good anime, it is well made to a certain degree, the biggest problem it has is that it's trying to be something that at least in my mind it clearly ISN'T. What I believe is that BGC2040 doesn't BELONG in the Bubblegum Crisis series of animes and that is my biggest criticism of it.

When I first saw the original Bubblegum Crisis, I noticed straight away that other than people, places and organisations that share the same names, these two animes were very different (not including other obvious similarities). I also began to notice as I watched BGC2040 again after seeing all of BGCOVA that certain things seem to be missing from BGC2040. I decided to investigate and the conclusion that I've come up with is strikingly similar to the conclusion Briareos has come up with.

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 is an exploitation of the original Bubblegum Crisis and AIC in their actions has made this very clear. Not only were they planning to release BGC2040, but they were also planning to release AD Police TV and Parasite Dolls. And yes, I acknowledge the fact that AIC has every right to exploit a series which they own. But we all know what happened don't we. BGC2040 lost its funding and wasn't very popular in Japan at all. At the same time it disrupted the production of AD Police TV and completely demolished Parasite Dolls. All three animes were saved by ADV Films at some point. And the only ones who have had any interest in trying to create a sequel to BGC2040 at some point was ADV Films because they experiences success with the series while AIC themselves had not.

The events of BGC2040 would actually make more sense if you took away the Bubblegum Crisis theme. IMHO opinion, you would get a better anime if it was simply "Tokyo 2040" without the "Bubblegum Crisis" in front of it. If Priss, Sylia, Nene and Linna had different names, if Genom was a different company, AIC could've effectively made an anime that is the RahXephon to an existing Evangelion. But as stated in the last paragraph, this wouldn't have helped AIC sell their other series as they had originally planned.

I find it ironic that Parasite Dolls shares more in common with the purpose of the BGCOVA than BGC2040 ever did. And by now I'm sure someone is asking themselves why I like AD Police TV so much when it's nothing like the BGCOVA. Well there's a simple answer to that. ADPTV isn't trying to be like BGCOVA at all. It uses the similar themes but keeps itself as a spin-off. BGC2040 on the other hand was the flagship series, the NEW Bubblegum Crisis. But instead what we got was something that was very much watered down, something meant for a more mainstream audience which lost a lot of the messages which the original BGC was exploring.

With all that said, I could go into the exact details as to why I think BGC2040 doesn't belong, but then this post would be more than twice the size of what it is. I find it ironic that Briareos has managed to point out what he has despite not seeing BGC2040, but I do agree that Briareos should actually see BGC2040 before he passes judgement.

If requested, I'll go into painstaking detail, but for now I hope I've managed to clear a few things up.

Thorough episode summaries are not opinions, and what I've said is within acceptable error. One doesn't need to watch all of Star Trek: TNG to get that it's an episodic show about a ship that involves large amounts of technobabble. Nor does my observations require knowledge of more then the basic fundamental that can be easily obtained for 2040.

The series isn't exactly cheap, and a lot of it doesn't appeal to me. I've seen well over 150 anime titles, and am not in it for style, fan service, or ecchiness. I'm in it for entertaining antics, and things of actual substance. If it showed up at the library I'd check it out to satisfy my curiosity, but you sure as day cannot order me to just cough up that kind of money for no really good reason. Nor can you expect me to just take your word for it, I've found most reviewers are more accurate in giving you a review that shows you the exact opposite of the reality of the show, and if they're blabbing about how good it is without specifics it's probably garbage.

Same can be said for the OVA, I've seen many blab about how it's arguably the best of the BGC series. I was curious about it and did watch all of it and to be really honest I didn't really enjoy all 8, I started to lose interest of it by episode 4 partly because the flow of the story was not done that well, however I do admit I prefer some of the characters from that than 2040 because they had more depth.

It's like you said, you don't need to watch all of Star Trek to understand the basics of it but that means that you have to at least watch it before you can fully judge on it.

So because I personally don't care for some of it's attributes, but mainly because I made a statement that wasn't complementary, nor truly negative for that matter, you feel I am judging it unfairly? Would you prefer for me to further clarify on why I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase this series, and those things about it which I do not care for? Realize that if you are trying to debate that decision, it is ultimately a completely self-contained opportunity cost argument and that appealing to it with regards to the OVA will not really get you anywhere.

By flow do you refer to inner episode or flow between episodes. If it is that between episodes it is key to recognize that it is a OVA series, and thus by its very nature is more intended to be watched as episodes. Especially due to the procedure used, which is something neither here nor there. That said I'm no fanboy either of this or much of anything else for that matter, and you are wrong to act as if I were. If inner episode could you please clarify, which things you felt or how you felt the flow was not done well. General statements are fine, but I'm more curious about what you in particular considered to be bad for the flow.

When I mean the flow from the OVA I meant the stories were broken up into arcs, the first 3 episode were based around Mason while the next 3 were around Largo although episode 4 didn't really make much sense in connection with the Largo story. Yes it's an OVA but other OVA's like Samurai X and Golden Boy had better flow even though they weren't released normally like TV series but they worked well for the focus of one main story. I guess what I'm trying to point out is that if you try to watch all 8 episodes of the original BGC OVA in one go, the story wouldn't flow well because the majority of them are quite episodic and have different stories, hence the titles of the OVA were also changed from "MegaTokyo 2032" to "MegaTokyo 2033". You'd most likely stop at a certain episode like say by episode 3.

2040 may or probably is an exploitation of the original but it worked perfectly for the international market with its success, and without that success Parasite Dolls wouldn't have even seen the light of day.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to buy a certain series but the constant cheap shots at 2040 for something that you haven't even seen one episode of seems a bit hypocritical. This is what I'm getting at, it's OK to feel and think what a series will be like before you see it but when you go all out and make comments on something based on summaries and opinions on the internet it seems...how shall I put it? Unfair? I've learned this myself with His and Her Circumstances. Originally I was turned off by its title but when I was curious to checking it out, that was a good decision because the series was actually pretty fantastic. I'm not saying you have to like 2040, what I'm trying to point out is at least watch some of it before you make an opinion or judgement on it.

What's with the "exploitation" stick, are you talking to Lynk, because that is not how I phrased it at all. Besides which, from what I've been given to understand the BGC OVA didn't perform that well in Japan unlike the US. Of course, success in the US is as much due to being one of the early titles. This however merely is descriptive of the size of the slice of the market likely to be interested in the product. Blue Gender, despite being one of the most low budget, idiotic, and disgusting series to come out can be successful, while something like Key: The Metal Idol can be nowhere near as successful due to these effects. Marketability and quality are very different things, and as people are oft to say "there is no accounting for taste."

As you'd be aware if you bothered to check the interviews section of the BGC OVA, or just the back if you thought about it, the series possessed neither an overall plan nor a constant director, unlike Gall Force. Each director was basically given license to do their own thing, within the constraints of the universe (which the Scoop chase director quite frankly violated). Despite this Episode 5-6 modifies 1-3 to enhance Mason's character into a human sim instead of a construct. That discussion is probably better saved for an article once I get up my website, given the history of such things.

It is not and should not be considered a series for spoon feeding, which does hurt its marketability. If it hadn't been one of the first series from one of the first companies it would likely have been more niche market. Of course, I've seen it consistantly at the local outlet of the major hardware chain that I buy such things from, while recently BGC 2040 is basically no longer stocked. On the other hand AnimEigo has much fewer titles then does the giants like AD Vision, and thus greater need to get what titles they do possess onto store shelves.

Emotionally invested is quite an overstatement there, there are far better series than that. I think you're missing the point I was trying to make. Lynk, MadMax and I have said at least watch the series (in this case 2040) you are commenting on otherwise it's hard for people to take you seriously because you're basing your opinion on summaries and opinions posted on the internet.

I can understand if you can't find 2040 in the stores but if it's there and you refuse to at least even check it out before making statements and opinions on it, then that's quite arrogant.

I loved both of the series, but if I really had to choose I would go with BGC 2040. It just felt like a more complete package for me. I got the full story and a sort of open-ended ending that allows for discussion. There was also more time to get to know the characters better. But in the end both series were great.

I've got a concept for a Bubblegum Crash 204X.

X years on Tokyo is beaing rebuilt (again), Guest Workers and (non-Voomer) Cyberoids are everywhere, and Genom is Footing the Bill.

Voomer Core Technology is Band, but Liquid Metal and Bionetic Construct Technology is not (though it is unpopluar), Stingrays Eerlier (less Versatile)Cyberoid Technology that was uneconomical (compared to Voomer Tech) in 2028 is now in use and although Genom leads the Industry it has compedtors.

Syla Stingray keeps a close watch on all Cyberoid tech serching for those who would try and Recreate "Core Technology", she knows the limitasions of the Eerilyer Cyberoid Tech and knows a new generasion of (less serve) Boomers are about to show up and then their is Genoms atempts to intergrate her farthers faild Nanomichine reserch in to Genoms next generasion of their Cyberoids.

Lenna has given up being an OL and is now a profeshional Fitness Trainer (though she is secretly studding Economics on the side) and is dating Meizaki who has moved back to Tokyo to run a branch office of his families bisuness.
