*Gah, my post didn't go though... curse you, crappy work internet!*
I checked the thread about this release over at AOD and there was another little piece of information. This release is apparently a new remaster made from a new film print... so it's possible some stuff will be cleaned up...
...however, I do agree with what you're sayin wbd. I don't think there's alot of improvement to be made with a blu-ray release. The best point I can think of is that the video will be in native resolution on a 1080p TV, so it won't be upscaled. Of course, you already brought up the negative to this, every imperfection and mistake will also be showin in all it's 1080p glory.
For now though, I'm going to wait until I see some comparison shots between this and the DVD release(s). It's possible, though unlikely, that this will be a great improvement over the previous DVD releases.
Even if it isn't, I may end up buying this set when/if it reaches the US anyways. Since I never bought the remastered DVD set, this will make a great substitute as long as it has some nice extras and sells at a decent pricepoint. If it looks bad at full resolution, I can always force it to display 480p so it'll play just like a nice progressive DVD.
