Review

Many years after Samus last explored the dark depths of Zebes in Super Metroid, Nintendo has finally released two more Metroid games. Metroid Prime for the GameCube and Metroid Fusion for the Game Boy Advance hit the shelves simultaneously and both feature equally immersive soundtracks.

Disc 1 contains 41 tracks from Metroid Prime, however most of the tracks don't go past the two minute mark, which is quite a downside, especially when you have a good battle theme playing. The first few tracks really do echo what Super Metroid has established for this series. The tracks are dark and subdued, giving you a sense that you're stumbling into the unknown, where many dangers lay ahead. Some of the tracks have a very interesting ambience, creating the illusion that somehow the music is a natural part of the environment around you. Other tracks, while well composed, sound a little out of place in a Metroid game. The only way to describe them is that they sound too "safe", which is a bad thing in a game that emphasises isolation in a dangerous environment. Of course, the battle tracks are just as thrilling as you would expect.

On the second disc are 37 tracks from Metroid Fusion. Since Metroid Fusion is a Game Boy Advance game, you should expect the music to sound very different from what you have already heard on the first disc with Metroid Prime. It's a set of very simplistic midi tracks which were made to be heard played through the tiny speaker of a Game Boy Advance. Despite this, some of the tracks still have their charm, even if they do sound repetitive. The disc has that Metroid flavour to it, but it's easy to see why it was included as a second disc with the Metroid Prime soundtrack.

The effects present in the Metroid Prime soundtrack are the icing on the cake and they really give you an other-worldly feel. As mentioned before, the biggest downside is the length of tracks, which seem too short to fully enjoy a lot of the themes. As for the second disc, it's enjoyable for the more hardcore Metroid fans and makes a nice free addition.
