The first US release of the original soundtrack of His and Her Circumstances (also known as Kare Kano), entitled Act 1.0, mainly comprises of musical scores from the animated TV series produced by Shiro Sagisu
who is also responsible for the original scores of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Nadia. This is an exceptional compilation in which various highlighted musical pieces from the first couple of episodes are featured as an introduction to the series.
Consisting of 24 tracks, 2 of which are vocally sung, Act 1.0 matches the light-hearted tone and bubbly feel of the series but also uses some dark moody pieces such as "Souichiro Arima I" and somber reflective tracks like "Treasure Every Meeting" to maintain a balance of the emotions presented through the original scores. I must admit I did not like "An Angel's Promise" (Opening theme to the TV series) at the first listen but the song grew on me as I continued to watch the series so it definitely helps to watch the series to appreciate the music. "Into A Dream" (Ending theme) contains a catchy chorus that depicts the fun and bubbly energy of the series and can become addictive to sing along to. The instruments used in the musical pieces include piano, violins, saxophones and drums, with each one of them carefully laid out to fit a certain tone.
All in all, fans of Shiro Sagisu's work and Evangelion will be delighted with this masterpiece, which serves as a great musical introduction to the series, and is to be followed up by the November 2005 release of His and Her Circumstances Act 2.0 in the US.
