I just finished watching Blue Gender the movie and it made me want to discuss the topic about good and bad anime movie conversions of a anime series. List what good and bad anime movies based on a anime series you saw and try to give a reason why.

I'll start it off with Blue Gender the Movie. I had just finished rewatching the whole Blue Gender series and decided to watch Blue Gender the movie. What I saw was plain butchering of the original script and reusing/re-editing of scenes from the series. The story turned out completely different from the series around the halfway point. The relationship between Yuji and Marlene was barely explored and sort of non-existant. There was no real fear or dread for the blue since they seemed like pushovers in the movie. They even removed or down played the majority of the villians from the original series. There is just so much wrong with this flick to even list it all.

If any of you have never seen Blue Gender before I suggest avoiding this movie at all costs. The series goes into so much more detail and is just an overall better story. I wish I could take back the time I wasted watching the movie.

So anyone else have movies of series that they liked or hated?

IMO, if you want to see how to do it right, watch the "SDF Macross" TV series and then watch "Macross: Do You Remember Love?"

I avoid Blue Gender the series at all cost, too.

I have watched a lot of anime movies, most of which can be said to be extended episodes. I have watched bad anime movies like the first CCS movie, which was an extended episode, a bad one. I have also watched good anime movies like the second CCS movie, which conclude the series and also gives you a heavy dose of cuteness with Sakura and Syaoran.

Though, in the end, I have not found any anime movie to be all that bad. The first CCS movie was not all that interesting, but wasn't diverting from the plot or change the actual characters themselves. It was just very uninteresting extended episode of the series.

Probably one of the anime movie that finished up the series on a bad note would be FMA. I was not too keen on the ending to FMA series with that movie. I don't know, but it felt very unfilled after I completed the series. I was expecting much more after the series was such a trip, so I wasn't too happy on how it ended at all.

Somehow I got the distinct impression that the FMA movie ended the way it did for the sole purpose of setting up FMA the movie "part deux"

Other than that, I thought the FMA movie was pretty well done.

Another movie that I've seen was "Dirty Pair: Project Eden". It wasn't really based on the TV series per se, but it really captured the feel of the characters and built on the franchise fairly well, IMO.

I have watched bad anime movies like the first CCS movie

may i ask what was wrong with it? i just watched the first movie today and i thought it was allright, no where near bad. never got bored throughout it.

however, if you watched the english dub, i'll agree that it was bad lol

Movies which are pretty much extended episodes aren't really that great, you can bypass CCS movie 1 if you wanted since nothing that important happens in relation to the rest of the series. It's more like one of the DBZ movies where something happens and it's never mentioned or doesn't affect the series at all lol. It's the equivelant to a mindless action flick made to generate money. However CCS movie 2 was extremely good and brought closure to the series very well so it's a must see for those who have seen the whole series.

CCS movie 1 vs CCS movie 2? Movie 2 wins hands down without a doubt.

I didn't like the third movie of Patlabor, it wasn't a bad one, but the story didn't unfold around the police division be know, more like a spinoff......and lacked mechas *shakes fist*

AMG! i liked. it moved a bit slowly, but the music was awesome and getting to see the goddesses use their powers was incredibly cool, as well as getting backstory about Belldandy's life in heaven. that said, more fights would have been cool, but yeah, i liked it. *pushes her inner romantic back under a rock*

cowboy bebop movie i remember liking, but not being overly thrilled... watched it a while ago though, so vague just about covers everything, ^_^;;;;

Movies that act like extended episodes are usually kind of bad. Although, I haven't really watched many series that actually have movies following them up. The only one I recall having seen was Naruto... and I thought it was kind of bad x.x.

R.O.D however was one I enjoyed quite alot, but I think the series came after the movie was made?

End of Evangelion was pretty good and mental i was getting it about half way through then you get to the bit where Rei fuses with Lilith and boom wth. It finishes of the series an alternative way but your not realy going to understand it anyway lol.

What about those animes that are like 3 or 4 part OVAs but are converted into movies... sometimes officially, sometimes not. An official movie version of an OVA that comes to mind it Rurouni Kenshin - Trust and Betrayal... and then an unofficial conversion is the ROD OVA where it's cut into a movie format when you watch it on TV.

I didnt know Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen the 4 part OVA(Trust and Betrayal) was turned into a movie i thought Ishin Shishi no Requiem was the only movie thats the one ive seen. Ishin is pretty good it shows part of Kenshins time as Battōsai.

The "Director's Cut" version of Trust and Betrayal is basically the original 4 part OVA cut together so it's one continuous movie. This was also done with Reflection.

Eva, I don't hate the Blue Gender series, I just hate the movie.

Lynk, I forgot about 3-4 part animes made into movies.

Macross Plus movie did a good job of replicating the 4-part Macross Plus series (I still like the 4-parter better though).

Aside from the obvious animation and artstyle difference in Parasite Dolls, the three episodes were easy to stick together into a movie form for ADV.
