Well, after putting this series on hold since it's release around the end of 2004. I finally got around to picking this series up and watching it, well 13 episodes of it so far. All I have to say is why did I wait this long to pick this series up and watch it?

A ton of shousen action happen, some romance on the side and ever so popular perverted comedy equal one very entertaining anime that meet just about all my tastes in anime. Doesn't over-kill the pervert humor either, which some anime series have done in the past. Doesn't just give you mindless shousen action, which almost every shousen anime does and the romance is not over the top, so the series has nice balance to it so far.

Totally no shortage of characters. Mai Hime has a large and interesting cast of character from Mai the main character to Natsuki and Mikoto to major supporting character and the classmates, the other HIMEs and the villians. Nice variety to each character, too. I'm quite fond of Mikoto and Natsuki. Characters I'm not fond of are Reito, don't really like that guy all that much. Even though Mai the main character, I'm not too dazzled by her. Just another character to me so far.

Anyway, going to try finishing this series up this weekend. I know a few people have watched this series here, so just wondering what you're take on the series is.

Oh, and you've only seen the first half. The second half is about twice as good. I'm not going to spoil anything for you, as you're probably going to like it a lot. Personally, I'm rather fond of Natsuki and Yukino myself. The story does center around Mai, but Natsuki and Yuki hold their own.

Oh, and is the term you're searching for "shounen"?

Trying my best not to hand out spoilers, but wait for the second half of the series I don't much care for the ecchi harem moments (sorry, but Tate sucks. I couldn't read the manga because it's so Taters-centric) but I love what happens to the storyline as the series progresses. I also love the music in this series, from the happy genki tunes to the sadder piano pieces and the different battle songs, especially Dhuran Shoukan.

Shizuru and Natsuki are my fav characters: Shizuru because she's so laidback and manipulative in the first half of the series, yet in the second half.... and I love her accent; and Natsuki because no matter how hard she tries to be hardcore and kickass, she's not. Haruka is another character I like, because no one can beat the hilarity that ensues whenever Haruka loses her cool. There are so many good and/or fun characters in this series that it's hard to choose just one or two favs.

Like you, Eva, I don't really care that much about Mai. She's a nice person, blahblahblah, but she just doesn't interest me as much as some of the other lunatics on display (i.e. Midori)

Anyway, finished up Mai Hime just a few minutes ago. Excellent series, though the ending was extremely cheesy consider just everyone was brought back to life. Still, I didn't mind the ending all that much. The second half of the series seem rushed compare to the first. While it was good, I felt it was being rushed around the end.

Shizuru turn out to be a lesbian during the second half of the series.

I got to admit, I didn't see that one coming. I figured out see was Hime, but didn't know she had those type of feelings for Natsuki. Not sure where they came from, but it's cool. Still, nice plot twist throwing Shizuru and her special feelings for Natsuki in the mix of the series.

Tate does suck. Of course, he got the boring Mai, so I never cared. The supporting characters were that much better than main character by a large margin for me in Mai Hime. Wasn't a fan of Mai or Tate. They were boring and his ecchi scenes were never that well done. I think my dislike for Mai is she's the steoro-type main heroin I've seen to many titles being indecisive during most of the series until the end.

Totally love the music, so I'm looking for OST. There was this one theme that was awesome. I liked quite a few battle themes. One problem I had with the music was basically too loud. Heard the music more than what was being sad. One problem with the opening is theme so much lower than the vocals. Though, it wasn't a serious problem. Just something I noticed.

Anyway, cool series. Moving on Mai Otome.

And Shizuru molesting Natsuki for the ultimate win. I nearly died that episode.

And don't forget Alyssa's delightful Engrish singing Unfortunately I've lost my copy of OST I and the track data for II, so I have almost no idea which song is which, but I do remember "who are dose lille girls in pain, just trap in castle on dark side moon?"

And for an element, I think Shizuru's extending naginata is one of the best. It's almost as much fun as setting fire to the kitchen stove, wheeee. Stuff my work, I need to watch this series again.

Don't like Alysaa song, but I could get it to you if you want. I can get the both OST if you want. I have my favorite tracks from the series in Kimi ga Sora Datta and Mezame. So, I haven't both to get the rest of OST at this point.

Shizuru was the coolest HIME period. Mia was just over-power and a ''Plain Jane'' type of main character and her child was far too powerful compared to the other children. Shizuru's child seem over-power, too. Until Natsuki show off her improved verison of Duran.

As for weapons, Nao, Mikoto, and Shizuru hands down had the best looking weapons. Nao's claw were so sleeky looking and her expression on her first when they move in for a close up is so deadly looking. Obviously, berserk Mikoto is a beast and got to love those sparks she creates when she swings the sword on the floor for a strike. Shizuru just had the coolest pose with her weapon.

Oh, I thought about it and I think the old priest was the only character to die in this entire series. xD

I love it when Nao licks her claws. So evil. Shizuru is just teh awesomenessie, admit it Kagatsuchi was FAR too powerful, especially considering that she didn't have just one MIP, but kept switching back and forth. Surely she should have suffered something like Natsuki did, when she realised she'd been betrayed? It just sucked that when Natsuki did whip out the big guns (literally!) her Superman moment of glory was so short-lived. At least Shizuru got to kick some ass before she was wiped out --the pursuit scene with Shizuru versus the First District grandmas still makes me laugh.

I'm sure I have OST 1 lying around somewhere, I just need to find it >_<

I didn't like the power gap between the Children. Mai's Kagatsuchi, Mikoto's Miroku and Shizuru's Kiyohime were in a class of their own. Natsuki's Child Duran got up to power of Kiyohime at the end as we know. Anyway, point being some of the children were just so much stronger than the other children.

lol, I did find it odd you can make another HIME your precious one. So, if Natsuki fought and beat Shizuru and defeat her without killing herself, she would still die since Shizuru's most precious one is Natsuki. That's crazy!

Anyway, I watched Mai Otome to 19. Instead of making a brand new topic, I'll just keep the conversation. Be helpful if somebody could change the title to Mai Hime and Mai Otome.

Well, not sure if I was going to like Mai Otome to start off since it's entirely different storyline, but after watching 19 episodes, I've really got into it, but it's still not as good as the orignal, but it's still a good series with basically all the old characters returning.

Most old characters make an appearance at some point of during the series. Even Reito returns, but he looks a bit different this time around.

Mashiro's character takes a big change from her original. While most characters from Mai HIME still maintain their basic character, Mashiro takes a 360 turn on her characters. She's selfish, bossy and pretty much a bitch to start the series off. Obviously, since she's the princess and soon be queen or should I say fake princess.

Nao seem the same as she use to be. She acts just like Juliet while she's using Otome. Nao's character seem self center and doesn't want to be bother by the problems of others and not be hassle by responsibilities. Nothing much changes with Nao.

Chie, the girl with glasses that was Mai's friend in Mai HIME. She's an Otome in Mai Otome, a high class one. Chie's role seem a little more important than in the previous one. Chie usually remind of a type yaoi male character holding a rose charming the ladies, except Chie a girl.

Shizuru stays just as awesome in Mai Otome.

You don't see Natsuki in action for a long time and it's short live. Hoping she get more action in the future.

Mai is gone, but she should appear some time in the future. She is in both openings and she looks absolutely over-power once again.

Midiro back! She seem like the only character that was a HIME that can summon her child; Gakuten'ou, out for battle.

Miyu back, too. Though, I think this is the same Miyu from Mai HIME. While they're storyline are completely different, I think the original Mai HIME happen a very long time ago from Mai Otome. Anyway, nothing much is explained about Miyu yet.

As I said earlier, Reito is back, but he's a cyborg. His body was weak and he had no choice to be turned into a cyborg. He looks very cool regardless. He's a cyborg of armor, so don't think you'll see a human looking Reito that's a cyborg.

Of course, there's also a bunch of new character. Mostly, all the character with little supporting roles in the previous series have more of up front in Mai Otome. Without a doubt, you should check this series out if you're into Mai HIME.

Reito: His name is Rado now that he's a cyborg; he corrects Youko when she calls him Reito. Haven't seen much of him or Midori's gang, but they're pretty interesting; is it just me, or are their design based on chess pieces?

Chie! I love the transformation her character's undergone, to a complete casanova, complete with the famous blue rose (aoi=blue in Japanese?) which she offers to Aoi. But I expect some fall-out from episode 19

Nao: I think Nao may be one character who's undergone one of the largest character changes, besides Mashiro. Although she tries to appear tough, self-centred and disinterested, I think she does have her kouhais best interests at heart, and she's often there at just the right time to help or save someone. Her promotion to Pillar didn't surprise me at all.

Shizuru: pwns your soul I love her new character, very flirty when she wants to be, as intelligent as her HiME counterpart, but no longer focused purely on Natsuki

Natsuki: still just the butt of the joke. The Kruboner is astonishingly lame compared to the old Kuga, who at least kicked ass sometimes, but old loyalty keeps me hoping for some late redemption.

Miyu's Vampire Hunter D look never fails to amuse me. It's pretty interesting to see Miyu in a possibly-friendly role this time around, and I'd agree that she is probably the same M.I.Y.U. from Mai HiME.

Arika alternates between annoying me and making me smile. Nina looks like the lovechild of Shizuru and Natsuki. The other new characters made so much impression on me that I barely remember them.

I'm not nearly as into this series as I was with HiME, and I'm seriously wondering about recent plot developments, but as long as they keep Mai and Tate out of this one, I'll be happy. With everything except some costume designs. *coughcoughAkiracough*

Episode 19 Spoiler

Aoi jumps off a cliff during episode 19. She was corner by a mob of poor people kicked out of the kingdom. They demand Aoi, who they figured out was a government official, tell them where the Queen Mashiro is. Aoi saw Mashiro in the crowd, but didn't tell them and jump off the cliff. It was sad.

BTW, nobody knew Mashiro was in the crowd.

Mashiro ran off after that. Pass out in desert before being picked up by Midiro and her crew. Midiro's crew also picked up Arika, too. Midiro is not the bad villian she was paint out to be at first. You'll find out more when you watch 19.

Oh yeah, a scene involving Natsuki will remain you of a funny scene that happen involving the old Natsuki. It's different from that scene, but still funny. Don't worry, you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.

One of the new characters that acting like Shizuru from Mai Hime is Tomoe. Shocking enough, Tomoe has an unhealthy addicted love to Shizuru.

You know Mai going to appear soon. Not sure if she'll bring Tate with her. I sure hope she does not have a big role to play in this series. If she does, this will completely remain of Gundam Seed Destiny where Kira re-appeared in the series and re-took the main character role. You can't believe how lame that was when that happen. I hope they don't let Mai hi-jack this series.

Tomoe is seriously, seriously unhealthy. I mean, dropping acid on people? She's on a one-way ticket to a straitjacket and the funny farm.

I like Midori's redesign, she's good as a serious character as well as the comic relief in HiME, and although she's presented a villain in the beginning, I have a feeling that she's a heroine in disguise.

Mai can come back, sans hijacks, but Tate isn't entering this house! Sirgay is a much better reincarnation of him; just hope that Taters himself doesn't curse us with his presence. Some people are already calling this series a GSD-clone, especially with the last scene of the new opening, and I dread a Mai-Athrun appearance.

Akira's costume would have been fine, except for that mask. I mean, all she does it add a tiny strip of red fabric and suddenly she's unrecognisable? Does that mean I could tie a sock across my face and be completely unknown?

Mai relate more to Kira. While Natsuki relate more to Athrun.

Mai Otome not a GSD-clone. Sorry, but one character like Mai reappearing doesn't make this a GSD. Jeez, the last scene of the new opening? I'm sure that type or scene was used in previous anime. Again, a scene doesn't really make this a GSD. Both animes are complete different genre from each another. Shesh, why do people try to find things that are not even there.

I don't think we'll see Akira for the rest of the series. Though, I think some other character wearing ridiculous masks like Akira will appear in the future. I think a saw masked character with Natsuki and Nao in the opening. Just watch the second opening and check it out.

Shesh, what's up with people calling Nao Juliet? I know her full name is Nao Juliet, but I thought that just a nickname she got from Spiral Shiho and her crew.

Because they get such thrills out of unfavourably comparing things and claiming that everything's a rip off of another show instead of daring to consider things with similar influences or techniques can be separate?

Her full name's Nao Juliet Zhang, but only Shiho calls her Juliet in the series and purely to annoy her. If people are calling her Juliet, they're obviously not paying attention to the series

I'd forgotten about Batgirl and Aladdin. Ugh. Please, shoot the costume designer now and put him out of his misery. And end ours too.

If they've only got 6 episodes left, I don't see how they're going to feasibly introduce two new pillars and Mai, and also resolve the plot threads flapping in the wind without turning the series into a shambles. Really hope they don't pull a HiME, where they lay out this elaborate cause for all of them to fight (i.e. the HiME festival and the red star) which is resolved in about two seconds, to speed the transition to the heroine's and otherwise useless hero's final boss showdown.

Anime News Network has confirmed 26 episode. I think they're going to rush Otome, just like they did with HIME.

Both Mai series really do need to have more episodes than 26. If they rush they ending of this series, it's going to be another disappointing ending to yet another series of Mai series.

Oh, Blue, if you want, I already got the full verison Crystal Energy by Kuribayashi Minami, the second OP of Mai Otome. Give me an IM if you're interesting in receive it from me. I love this track!

Damn it, 26 episodes just don't do these series justice HiME didn't really get started until about 16 or 17, IIRC, and Otome's followed the same pattern. I don't see how they can devote enough time to tying up all the different character and plot threads. Call me pessimistic, but I think I'm going to like the ending of Mai Otome about as much as I liked the ending of HiME......

I'm also praying that Mai's not going to be the deus ex machina, brought in to save the day with her mighty kick when Natsuki and co. bugger up yet again.

I'm glad they changed the Otome OP, at least, it's just too genki for the recent developments and the new theme is frankly a better tune. The music for Otome hasn't gripped me as much as the HiME tracks did, Aoi's scene in 18 was the first time that I really took note of the background music.

Well, only ANN is comfirm 26 episodes at this point, but I'm not kinding, there's two Otome, I assume they're Otome, characters in the opening next Natsuki, Nao and Shizuru. Mai has yet to be introduce either. So, we six episodes to cover all these characters? I have to agree with the thinking that this series might end up like HIME.

Yes, the new Otome OP; Crystal Energy, does rock and does fit how the series has changed. Since the there is a new OP, it might mean there's more than 26 episodes since you rarely see a 26 episode series change it's OP ever. So, we could only hope.

Anyway, watched episode 20.

Well, episode 20 left off where 19 left off, obviously. Mashiro and Mikoto chasing after Akira and they get eaten by some giant creature. Emo Akira her feelings and refusing to fight blah blah, you know, the typical emo main character refuse to fight after a tragic event. The monster's belly fills with lava and Akira changes into Otome to save both Mashiro and Akira. After they're out, they see the village on fire and go back and save it.

Mostly, you see Akira getting back on track and Mashiro continue to watch Midiro's leadership skills. For Akira and Mashiro part in episode 20.

Of course, we get our funny laugh at Natsuki as Haruka laughes at her for exposing herself in public. Pretty funny scene there.

Nina, acting just as emo as Akira, tell Sergy not to call her Nina any longer.

A bunch of students joining Nagi's Meister ranks. Of course, that psycho Tomoe joins that group and gets Shizuru out jail, just to place her in another jail, Tomoe's personal jail, where Tomoe forces herself on Shizuru and makes out with her. How ironic... xP

Lol, of course the ending of this episode made me happy. A shadow spirit of Mikoto! I hope we get to see human Mikoto in this series. I really wish they didn't turn Mikoto into a cat in this series. She was totally badass with the sword in HiME.

That's about it for 20. Can't wait for 21.

Agree, emo-Arika, boohoo-Mashiro and pappa-complex-Nina just bore the hell out of me. "Don't call me Nina"... ugh, I would have walked away too. What was she expecting from Sergay? I watched HiME for the characters, and now I watch Otome for the same characters, which is unfortunate since most of them are secondary or background characters at best.

It was pretty cool to see Midori in command, though, and learn why Aswad want the technology. I think we'll be seeing some human Mikoto soon; I assume the feral loli in the preview was her

Well, Mashiro being "boohoo" ok since she seem to have legit reason, but Arika's and Nina's reason behide the way they act is ridiculous. Arika is just you're typical emo type main character, so nothing shocking there. Nina falls in love with her foster father. I swear, I've seen that ridiculous type of love in an anime before.

Outside of Sergay, most of these new characters blow. I have to agree with you, Blue. I watch Otome for same characters from HiME, some of who have a more interesting role in the storyline, but at this point, the main focus is between Arika and Nina.

Also, I hope I'm not the only one that thinks both of them have ridiculous hair styles, am I? They look far better when there hair is down normally.

If Mikoto does appear, then she better have a sword of some type.

Mashiro has plenty of reason to be whiny and upset after recent events (especially last episode) but the emo-overload from characters I don't care about just doesn't interest me. I did like it in #20 when Mashiro pointed out that Arika's not the only one suffering. Arika chose to be an Otome, after all, whereas Mashiro had no choice about being used to fill the missing princess's shoes. Now watch as it turns out that she IS the princess really. Would be more of a twist than Nina being the lost heir

Heh, I mocked Nina's hairstyle when she appeared back in HiME as a background character. Good ole Sunrise, they just had to reuse that design... I was eating rofl waffles for an hour or so. And Nina with her hair down looks even more like Natsuki's bastard child o.o

I'm not sure Mikoto would have a sword; when the apparition appears at the Harmonium, doesn't it carry a staff or spear of some kind? But a return of Miroku and the subsequent mass destruction would be incredibly awesome.

Thanks for the names ^^ I haven't read the Otome manga, after reading the HiME manga, I thought the Mashiro is a guy cross-dressing surrounded by dozens of girls would be just as off-putting as a Mai-Tate-Natsuki love triangle. Come on, manga-Natsuki, where was your self-respect?

Well, I got around to watching the short Mai HIME DVD extra. Nothing much to say about them except you get a ton of fan service and some comdey, but it basically introduces all the HIME and any important characters outside the HIME like Reito and Tate. It had some pretty cool artwork in these short 1-2 DVD extra. Since it's short, it's worth picking up and watching it, if you haven't, Blue.

I'm getting around to picking up Mai Otome DVD Special 1 and 2. 2 was just released and these DVD Specials are probably the same type of thing like Mai HIME DVD Specials.

I checked out the trailer to Mai HIME movie. I can't wait until that's released later this year. I know that's going to be awesome. From the trailer, it seem Akira is the villian. I know Otome characters appear in the movie like Laura Bianchi, who's standing right next to Akira when she's taunting Alyssa in the trailer. Here's an image of Laura.



I'm pretty sure that was here next to Akira.

I want that movie now, but I think it's slated to be released in Fall of this year.

Anyway, I got around to watching episode 21.

Mikoto is back? I'm not really sure, but you get to see the back of her head, then they got back to Mikoto the cat. I'm not sure what's up with that, but I'm sure that will be explained soon enough. Also, Nagi doesn't need Akira any longer? Not sure what's going on either. Is Nina the queen or something? Again, not sure what's going on there.

Anyway, outside that, just another episode where Mashiro getting the trust of her people back and becoming a leader, as expected when you saw how she watched Midiro. The episode end with Sergay, Tomoe and Chie getting ready to attack Aswad to capture Mashiro. You know Chie up to something, but not sure what just yet.

Tomoe as crazy as ever. Shizuru seem to be having fun though. xP

Oh, if you watch the preview. I think Mai appears once again.

The HiME movie is a fake trailer, created as a joke, hence the date of 20006. But you can bet it'll be good, since it'll be 18,000 years in the making...

As for ep 21...

Remember the cradle that Nagi spotted in the pics taken when Nina was found? That's the one that the princess was supposedly concealed in, so current speculation is that Nina is in fact the princess. But since the missing princess was named Mashiro, and the current 'Mashiro' was just a substitute, that would mean Nina is really named Mashiro...

Chie is definitely up to something. Evil Chie (through Shiho's eyes) looked so awesome. Also loved Tomoe's irritation when Chie overstepped her, literally, in talking to Wong at the end. Even when mud starts raining down, Chie can still act as laid back and cheerful as ever.

Yay, Mashiro grows up and takes responsibility for the very people that rejected her and murdered Aoi. Possibly. (Who was that in the hospital bed that Chie visited?) Mimi dies. Don't care. The Aswad-Windbloom alliance was kinda cool though. Although if Mashiro is only a stand-in (any similarities to Akira acting as Takumi's double?) then will she really be able to take back 'her' kingdom and give Aswad the technology they want?

But the Tomoe-Shizuru scene and the "yochi yochi yochi" [sic] has totally short-circuited my brain. The toys, the dummy, the diaper..... what the HELL?! That Tomoe's into some kinky kinky stuff..... fourteen year olds can be such perverts

Man, I missed the joke. I still won't mind if that movie was real. I was confused as to where Mai Otome DVD Special 1 was. I thought it was a real trailer, then I was like "That's not really a special..." Oh well, thanks for clear that up. I missed the joke completely.

I wonder if character stay dead in this series unlike in Mai HIME. I think Aoi alive at this point, too. Due to Chie taking care of somebody in the hospital. Who else would it be at this point? Mimi should stay dead. I don't see any logical way to bring her back to life. Be kind lame if they did find some ridiculous if they brought her back. Supposely she was Alyssa verison of Otome, though they were played by different seiyuu. I believe every seiyuu returned to do the character they did in HIME.

I think it can easily be said that Tomoe totally destroy Shizuru from HIME in the sanity department.

Mai-Hime looked good and was good, a bit of a pitty party and wishy washy crap fest near the end, but its overcome I think. Mai-Otome; I don't know... Still haven't seen yet. Looks okay though.

But seriously, there was a cool moment late in Mai-HiME where a song is played just before a battle begins... and I nearly jump out of my chair because I instantly recognize the song. I had recorded it off of the internet radio almost a year ago but didn't catch anything about the song so I didn't know what anime it was from or who sang it.

Very cool song and doubly cool now that I know where it came from and it what context it was used.
