Welcome to the OFFICIAL C3F Thread
This is place to discuss anything Macross, from the iconic original 1982 TV series, to the latest prequal, Macross Zero. The pilots lounge is open while your Valkyries are undergoing repair, but don't worry this is a special occasion. Destroid pilots as well as bridge crew and any pop idols out there are also welcome to chat away about one of the greatest and underrated anime franchises out there.
Zentradi are also welcome, just don't bring the war in here with you.

I've just seen Macross Zero lately, damn the animation is so damn cool. It had the kind of fast paced battles everyone has wanted to see in Macross, of course the battles in DYRL and Plus are still pretty cool. Though to be honest, other than the relation to the original series and the great battles, I still prefer the Macross Plus characters over the Macross Zero characters. The relationship between Isamu, Guld and Myung is just too hard to beat (of course NOTHING can beat the Hikaru, Misa, Minmay love triangle lol).

I have seen Macross Plus a while ago, and I thought it was a pretty good anime, I wouldn't mind watching it again. It's one of the animes that kept my interest when I was just getting into anime.
I haven't seen the other Macross series, so I'll have to check out Macross Zero, sounds like something I would like.
Why yes, yes I do... I remember... love...
XD

Impossible is Nothing to an Anime Engineer!
With all the fuzz going on here about Macross, I really must admit I'm curious. It seems to be such a big and legendary anime that I might just take the chance and get the first ADV re-release DVD. I was thinking about getting the AnimEigo boxsets two years ago when they were new, but they were just SO DAMN expensive. Plus I'm still uncertain as to how much I'm going to like Macross... but it seems that everyone who's seen it likes it, so who am I to argue? Guess I'd better get some of my money together and go buy the first DVD w/ box and start watching already; I can't think of a better way to reboot my anime hobby. But I have to finish rewatching RahXephon first
By the way, I'm intrigued by the fact that the same Japanese voice actress plays the English dub part of her character like 20 years later. Amazing!
Yeah, I remember it. I remember that it's awesome too and that I want more of it, like a zombie wants brains.
It's a shame Macross is fought over so much. Nobody in Japan seems to be able to agree just who owns it. Meanwhile, on the US side we have Harmony-Gold who thinks they own everything with the name Macross on it and have made it nearly impossible to release any more of it here.
Speaking of Macross, has anyone actually seen "Macross 7"? I haven't seen it, but was just curious if its as bad as I've heard?

I haven't seen it either, I'm reluctant to. I've heard and know a lot about it through info on the web but generally hardly anyone likes Macross 7 lol. One thing it does do is add a lot of background information about the Protoculture and more importantly, the Supervision Army which we hear hardly anything about despite the fact that the ASS-1 (SDF-1) was a Supervision Army ship.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
Man I still haven't seen Macross zero, or 7 for that matter. I'm digging myself into a hole of all these animes I need to watch and it keeps getting deeper and deeper XD
Don't bother with 7 unless you're really diehard about Macross... but even diehard fans don't even bother with 7 LOL
But anywayz, something really bugs me about Macross that I really need to talk about. The whole original series, DYRL timeline split.
At the end of the TV series when Kamjin goes for his suicide run against the Macross, he pretty much wipes it out completely. However in DYRL this never happened. The thing is that Macross Plus follows the DYRL timeline. This fact is shown clearly by seeing the Macross whole and the fact that the Macross has both ARMD-1 and ARMD-2 attached as arms instead of the Prometheus and Daedalus. And then Macross 7 uses the VF-19 from Plus, but it remains vague as to which timeline it's actually following... then you have Zero which complicates things a little more as well cause you're getting the sense that it's following more along the lines of DYRL and Macross 7...
You've read it! You can't unread it!
I wouldn't say I'm diehard at all, so sounds like I definitely shouldn't check that out XD But I would like to see Zero.
The thing about Macross Plus and Zero is that you appreciate the intricacies of it more if you've seen the original TV series and Do You Remember Love? I mean there is a lot more going on in Plus than you realise if you're someone who hasn't seen the original TV series, and same applies for Zero. They do a lot of things that mirror what they did back in 1982 with the TV series and the movie in 84... it's that oldskool charm that really makes Macross special. It's also the fact that as the animation techniques get more advanced and varied, you get more intense scenes with the Valkyries with Zero being the most intense, though Plus, DYRL and even the TV series still had their pwnage moments.
But yeah, Zero is by far the most kickass when it comes to Valkyrie action. Gundam's ain't got nothin on the Valkyries

‘BEN NOOOOO…..’
You know I swore to myself that I would never fall for one of these Sci-fi transforming animes; they just looked so cheesy…. The only anime I had watched before was Martian Successor Nadesico, Macross Saga just never stood out at the shop when I went to buy my anime, Well I picked up a copy to rent one day when nothing else was on show. Sad thing to say is I’m now hooked….
Animation aside this plot is really interesting and I hated the way the last episode of Vol 2 finished, I’m going to have to pick up Vol 3 as soon as possible

Now I'm gonna come and do that everyday until you stop watching the Robotech version and actually get a copy of the ORIGINAL version. Trust me, there is a world of difference between the two. ADV is releasing it complete and uncut with a true English version as a bonus. I suggest you buy that and not waste time with Robotech unless you want to watch Robotech, not Macross.
And Macross isn't an anime about transforming mecha, it's an anime about love, culture and the ties that bind people together. The transforming mecha part is just for background effect.

I KNOW THAT'S WHAT WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY!
I had thought it was a just an anime about transforming mecha, but I was wrong. Why did you think I rushed out to buy the third vol of it to watch it...?
Let not start the whole Robotech Vs Macross argument, I will be watching both side of the anime, just one after the other it around 300 minutes long remember.... I have enough arguments on the Sailor Scouts Vs Sailor Senshi,
God Kyle piss me off.....

And what I was saying is that you're not watching Macross, you're watching Robotech.

I'm in the Macross Plus camp. Its just a great overall short series and the best Macross series IMO. I recommend Macross Plus to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. Outstanding series.
BTW Anyone know how to do spoiler tags here? or do I have to yellow text it?
Aye, when it comes to Macross for beginners, Macross Plus would be it. Cause obviously there would be people who wouldn't like the original TV series because of its age and Zero is too hard to find legally.

Thanks for the tags. Macross Plus is definitely the best way to get your feet wet to get a feel for the Macross series.
I forgot what did Guld do to Myung in the past flashbacks? Its bugging me that I can't remember.
Guld found Myung and Isamu in a romantic moment, his Zentradi instincts of violence took over. He beat Isamu which from the looks of it knocked him out cold, grabbed Myung and ripped her shirt off. The flashback doesn't make it clear as to whether Guld actually did rape Myung or stopped himself before he could go through with it though. You do see himself stop for a moment and catch a glimpse of himself in the mirror though I can't remember if there was a look of rage or shock on his face.
The flashback suggests that Guld did stop himself and Myung was able to get to safety and was crying in Isamu's arms. But then again, the flashback is pretty sketchy, something more might have happened in the flashback which wasn't shown simply cause it was too traumatic and the flashback only showed Guld enough for him to realise what he had done. And of course the mirror itself could be an actual physical feature in the room or it could be figurative, used as a tool within the flashback to say "look at what you have done."
Myung does sleep with Guld in Macross Plus, but too be honest, I've known a girl who has slept with the guy who had raped her a few years before and of course she's not the only one, there are plenty of cases out there. The girl I knew and Myung were both emotionally fragile so that alone for me, isn't enough proof that Guld didn't go through with it.
In the end the scene itself is pretty horrific and whether you choose to believe he did or didn't is up to you, the viewer.

Analog Wrote:Speaking of Macross, has anyone actually seen "Macross 7"? I haven't seen it, but was just curious if its as bad as I've heard? I thought Macross 7 was downright unbearable. I only got through about the first 10-15 eps or so. Apparently it gets better later on, but I just lost interest. I found most of the characters annoying, Basara in particular. The animation is of fairly low quality, with lots of loops and reused footage. The same J-Pop (which I hate) songs are played over and over again.
There is some good information about the Macross saga in there, but overall I found it to be the red-headed step child of the series.
Zero on the otherhand is well worth watching, although it gets pretty wierd at the end.

IIRC the offical story is that the ARMDs were used to replace the characters sometime after the original series. Also, I believe that while the story from the original series is canon, most of the visual aspects from DYRL are canon. Can't remember where I saw that though.
Thanks for the info Lynk.
I need to rewatch Macross Plus again. BTW Which version of Macross Plus did you like better? I liked the 4 episode series better than the movie. A lot was cut out of the movie and the new scenes weren't worth the cut.
@ Prime: But ARMD-1 and ARMD-2 were destroyed in the initial Zentradi attack on earth and the Macross was pretty much wiped out by Kamjin's suicide attack. The state of the Macross is in Macross Plus suggests it is the Macross that appeared in DYRL? Plus in an interesting twist, the trailer for Macross Plus seems to point towards DYRL rather than the original series as well. I know both series are canon, it's just that it seems like it was decided to follow the DYRL? timeline and way of thinking rather than the TV series, that's all.
@ Morpheus: I liked both versions actually. They had cut a lot out of the movie, but they had added a lot of alternate scenes and had rearranged a couple of things. It still made sense and it still worked, it showed an alternate storyline that worked just as well as the OVA series.

I've watched Robotech the Macross saga, I found this very interesting so I have bought Volume 1 of the newly dubbed Macross series which I am finding more enjoyable than Robotech, I've also Seen Macross Plus OVA which I absolutely loved. I'm also thinking about getting Macross 2.

I'm not picky. Belt, shirt, any other article of clothing...
I think I'm gonna have to at least rent the new Macross dub... if not buy it outright as a boxset or thinpak.

I wouldn't get the thinpak since all of the extras are taken out, and I know for a fact that the extras included are layered heavily throughout th series. It would be a waste to get the thinpak.

I CAN'T CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT!
I so love the ADV dub for SDF Macross! I've seen this anime so many times over but somehow the English dub makes it all seem brand new again! I watch animes in both English and Japanese all the time cause of the wonders of DVDs, but this is the first time an anime has made me feel this way between the English and Japanese versions. It's... like WOW. This anime is 24 years old but it never gets old, it lives on forever and the new English dub is brilliant. It has all of the voice actors who I so wanted to see in Macross... hell pretty much everyone over at ADV has a part in it lol XD But damn... I love it!
On a side note, the only thing that bugged me initially was the way they pronounced Macross... XD
