Original Macross co-creator Shoji Kawamori's production roles have been confirmed for the 25th anniversary Macross television series, tentatively titled Macross 25. He will be story creator, executive director, story supervisor, and mechanical designer. The actual director and other scriptwriters have not been announced. Satelight (Noein, Macross Zero) will animate for the sponsor Big West and the Macross 25 Project committee. Kawamori serves as managing director on Satelight's board. The female lead will be announced during a August 18 debut concert. Source: Moon Phase (via ANN.com)

AH! Fuck yeah! Macross Frontier!
Quote:18-year-old newcomer Megumi Nakajima stars in tentatively titled Macross Frontier
At the Macross 25th Anniversary Live: Minmay meets Fire Bomber concert in Tokyo Saturday night, co-creator Shoji Kawamori (Escaflowne, Aquarion) and voice actor Sho Hayami (Max of the first Macross series) announced that Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Macross Plus) will co-compose the music for the new Macross television series and that the heroine Ranka Lee will be played by Megumi Nakajima, an 18-year-old newcomer selected by a nationwide singing and acting audition in Japan.
Kawamori and Hayami also introduced a pilot film of the new Macross work, now tentatively titled Macross Frontier. The story in production takes place in "20XX A.D." on a galactic colonization fleet named Macross Frontier. Since music for the new Macross series is still being composed, Nakajima sang Kanno's "Voices" from Macross Plus. Mari Iijima (Lynn Minmay), Yoshiki Fukuyama (Macross 7's Basara's singing voice), Chie Kajiura (Macros 7's Mylene's singing voice), and Nobutoshi Hayashi (Basara's speaking voice) performed solo and all together. More details will be posted in the upcoming event report.

Damn! Now I'm over-hyping myself!
You know, after looking through this thread and seeing it on the shelves at Bradley Video, I just might rent Macross Plus pretty soon.
You won't regret it.
For some of us, the giant robot era never died!
Amen to that, man!
To tell you the truth, it's primarily the Valkyrie fights that intrigue me the most about Macross Plus. But the story also looks interesting, so I'll check it out sometime. Maybe after my Mid-terms.

I'm gonna reserve my comments on Frontier until I actually see it since Macross is such a hit and miss series.

...or you could just go right ahead and judge it based on a short trailer that doesn't show you much other than pretty imagery... but I guess "graphics over gameplay" rules everything.

Well, even though we can't tell what the story will be like, I can say that the visuals look pretty impressive.

Because there is such thing as overdoing it. It looks like the styles are clashing between the design of the characters which are all cel based and the general macha design, etc which are all overly shiny, etc. When you switch between the space scenes and the scenes that show the characters and standard backgrounds, it looks like you're watching clips from two different shows.
Macross Zero was walking this fine line when it was made, and it managed to pull it off despite having a few problems, but this looks like they may have gone and been a little bit too ambitious with it.

I'm the one who suggested that patients is the key while you and falcon were the ones to jump right in and go ZOMGWTFBBQ AWESOME with it based on a trailer on YouTube. But seeing as you guys wanted to judge it before we actually knew anything about it, I thought, "hey, might as well join in." So please, don't give me any of that.
Plus I never said anything about any lack of quality, YouTube related or not, I was talking about a possible clash of STYLE, which at any video quality seems pretty damn apparent. I'm just calling it how I see it on the trailer, but I haven't made any comments about the finer details or the story or any of that kinda jazz. In the end, it doesn't matter what it looks like, the animation could be either super rich or absolutely crap and I still wouldn't care, just as long as we get a SDF or Plus quality story and script out of it.
It also looks very generic, the animation I mean... I mean to today's standards, that overly glossy thing they seem to have with similar animes where the light sources just seem to wash part of the image away... *shudders* can't these animators try to make things look a little more unique rather than uniform to what everyone else has?
(on a smaller note, the transformation sequences for the VF's have always looked good)

I just hope that the story is better than Macross Zero. And I sincerely hope that it is longer than just 6 episodes.
16 November 2007, 10:41 AM
It's a TV series not an OVA, so yes, longer than 6 episodes. Should be at least 12-13 episodes, or maybe even a full 26 episode series. But Plus was only 4 episodes (and the movie version) and it rocked majorly...
Macross Zero was aright, it just failed with the whole mystical side Shoji Kawamori tries to add to Macross. I think the main reason why Macross fans accept it is cause of Roy Focker and the closeness it has with the original series.

A good part of Zero was that a Destroid Monster made an appearance.
16 November 2007, 10:59 AM
Yeah, that was a great moment. But I personally love the moment at the start of the first episode where it showed the ASS-1 crash-landing on earth... the moment sent shivers up and down my spine...

Y'know, in a way the clashing styles remind me a lot of the way Robotech: Shadow Chronicles turned out. By that, I mean the contrast between cell characters and CGI mecha. It was a distraction, but I can't argue with the fact that the methods employed allowed the series to be made in the first place. I don't know if the production company would have had enough funds to get RSC done with just cell drawings.
By the same token, if mixing CGI and cell characters allows the animators to spend more time detailing and drawing the characters, I'm all for that as well.

You know what, I really didn't want to mention The Shadow Chronicles because it makes me sick just thinking about it, but I thought the exact same thing.
And in the case of cgi and cel mixing in animes... it's been done before and it's been done VERY well. Most animes you don't even realise that what you're seeing is CGI and the blending between the CGI and the cel style animation is either flawless or at a happy median that just simply works, I just wish they'd make that kind of effort with Frontier instead of what I'm seeing right now...
I also feel that they're purposely biting off more than they can chew with this... I mean you get a lot of people discovering that you can do all of these things with cgi and all that... but most of the time they never sit back and think for a second if it's really what is best to pimp it all out to the max.
I dunno, the whole Star Wars prequel thing comes to mind with this kind of thing. You want there to be some restraint and down to earth-ness in there too.

Okay Macross 7...... Where to start... Heck I don't know where to start, I damit I've only watched the first two episode off of you tube. To me it a style of Anime I never seen before..... I turly don't know whatever to love it or hate it. The Music.... to me seems to be one the key selling points but what I've seen of the animation and plot so far want me cry in disgust.
I'm finding it very confusing in the opening and it seems to throw the Characters in with no planning..... for the first two episodes.
I got questions like How the hell did Basara Nekki get his hands on a VF-19 Excalibur?
It only been running for two epiosdes and it already given be more questions then the usually shows I seen. Sure I'm going to watch it because the music has got me hook. I just hoped it had better quality......
I'm going off to shot Falcon in the foot.. it just seems the sane course of action to take now.... Don't know why, Don't care....
