Metroid Prime 3 Corruption Discussion Thread
#1
So, I got Metroid Prime 3 Corruption on Thursday and it took me 19 hours 10 minutes to complete it on Veteran mode with a 100% collection rate. It took me so long cause I spent most of my time scanning EVERYTHING and reading all of the data-logs and just soaking up the environments in the game. I literally just stood there and looked at things just to see all the finer details lol.

There were quite a few things I liked about this game, I think it tied up the Prime sub-series very well, though Phazon and its relation to Metroids themselves is still a mystery despite the HUGE, HUGE amounts of information you find out about it in this game. I also have a feeling that if there is going to be a remake of Metroid II Return of Samus, it's going to have Randus in it as a badguy. Why do I say this? Because in the 100% ending you can see his ship appear as Samus' ship enters hyperspace. He very well may have survived and is highly corrupted by Phazon...

There's also a part early on in the game, when you see the first PED suit enabled GF Trooper use his suit, that I like. It's just after the cutscene end and then suddenly he goes "What the heck is that?!" and you suddenly see Ridley swoop by and attack another part of the base in the distance. XD Man I loved that part, it was so damn awesome. By instinct I starts firing off into the distance towards Ridley lol.

I also liked that little mini battle you have with him in morphball mode, that was a nice touch. But it was great fighting with him while you both went falling down the generator shaft, that was very cool. Omega Ridley was also cool to fight...

Speaking of which, Ridley's metamorphosis over the years is really starting to make sense now. In Metroid Zero Mission he's normal, a dark brownish colour and when you defeat him, you can see all the explosions, but he doesn't break up, he just drops to the background and then out of sight. Then he returns in Metroid Prime, this time all mechanised up as Meta Ridley. When you defeat him there he drops off of the cliff. He returns yet again in Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, still as Meta Ridley, but with upgrades to his mechanised enhancements. When you defeat him, he falls to the bottom of the generator shaft. Then, later in the game comes Omega Ridley. Now THIS is where things start getting interesting, he's still got mechanised enhancements, but he's been charged with Phazon and his colour has changed from brown to blue. Once you defeat him here, he explodes in the a cloud of vapour... which confuses me... But let's assume he survived that battle. The interesting note about his colour change I made earlier is great cause in Super Metroid, Ridley has purple colouring instead of that dark brown colour he used to have... and THEN in Metroid Fusion, there's a specimen of Ridley being kept in the BSD lab which an X mutates into and it looks suspiciously like a highly charged Phazon variation of Ridley, similar to Omega Ridley... blue colouring and all.

I'll leave it at that for now, but I hope I have other people to talk about MP3C with in this place. I have a lot more stuff to talk about regarding MP3C, the Prime subseries and Metroid as a whole in relation to this game. SO MUCH MORE. And believe me, I've made some very interesting observations for those who are interested.

Oh, oh, oh! There's this thing I really love in the game. In Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, it was revealed that the Luminoth had contact with the Chozo and as a gift, the Chozo gave the Luminoth a Spin Attack device... It appears that the Chozo gave these devices to all of the advanced species they encountered. On Bryyo, the advanced species that used to inhabit that world also received a Spin Attack device from the Chozo, and it appeared that they had also been in contact with the Luminoth too! The area in which you get the Spin Attack is so cool, it has two HUGE statues, one of a Chozo and the other of a Bryyonian. The Chozo statue is giving the Bryyonian statue the Screw Attack device... I thought that was so cool. It's funny though, the Luminoth had their Screw Attack locked up in a high security containment field... the Bryyonians on the other hand just kept it out in the open, though in a very remote area of their planet... lol

I also love the many other references to past Metroid games (past as in past Metroid games that were made). Some of which creeped me out cause they made too much sense and fitted together all TOO well lol.

For example. Phazon is a mutagenic compound also has the ability to spawn life from itself. Remember the Ing from Echoes? Well it appears that when Phazon puddles mature to a certain stage where they become alive, they start to resemble Inglets, those little Ing creatures that slimed on the wall and lil blob heads would pop up and fire blobs at you. Remember now? Just think, the Ing were created when a Phazon meteorite impacted Aether... so OF COURSE the Ing would resember Phazon based lifeforms despite not being spawned from Phazon but rather a Phazon related event.

There's also a bit of confusion when it comes to Metroids in this game... they refer to Phazon Metroids and then relate them to "Tallon Metroids", even though Metroids aren't native to Tallon IV and were brought over by the Space Pirates to use with Phazon experiments... and most of the Phazon Metroids in this game aren't related to the ones the the Space Pirates brought to Tallon IV. And then there's the whole Phazon and Metroid connection itself. It's said that Metroid Prime is called Metroid Prime because it resembles a Metroid, but then Metroid Prime is able to spawn Metroids to use against you in the final battle with it. The Metroids themselves were said to be created by the Chozo on SR-388 to combat the X parasite population... but the Prime sub-series continues to maintain some connection between Phazon and Metroids... it's all a little confusing and doesn't quite add up... oh well.

Oh wow, you're a bit obsessed there aren't ya lol

Watching my dad play this is amusing in itself.....took him 2 hours to get through the beginning of the game >_0....and I mean just up to the berserk lord.

I think the creators need to stop being so mysterious with storyline connections and add everything up already XD

(also, what the hell is with not having a countdown till planet explodes escape at the end, what a rip off)

Well if they stay like that then they can reveal more stuff later maybe XD

I just know a lot Stick Out Tongue

The mysterious nature is what I like about Metroid, they don't treat you like an idiot, they give you pieces of information, very detailed pieces of information, and then you as the player have to go through it all and figure it out for yourself. It's a very different manner of story telling to other games because it's not trying to be a playable movie like other games have been trying to be these days. There is a lot of stuff about the Metroid universe I know about and understand, but there is also a lot that I don't understand simply because the people in the universe don't understand it either and don't have the information to share with me to fill in the gaps.

Nothing is tied into a perfect bow and delivered to you because that's not how things realy work, you may discover a lot of about some things but be in the dark about other things. Plus Retro Studios has done a great job in explaining more than just things that they created in the Prime series. They've managed to explain a lot of things that have gone on in past Metroid games too.

Quote:(also, what the hell is with not having a countdown till planet explodes escape at the end, what a rip off)
I'm more of a Metroid fan than you are obviously, and I didn't mind Stick Out Tongue They did have a kind of a countdown with the Leviathan heading towards the base on Norion and the AU telling you the countdown in minutes... though I noticed that that event is a scripted event rather than a timed event.

But there are OTHER things in this game which I really didn't like that really SHOULDN'T have been in any Metroid game. Such as the Invasion of the Pirate Homeworld and defending the demolition troops. And there didn't seem to be enough puzzles in this game... I haven't gone through an accurate count or comparison with the other games, but maybe it was just the fact that there was A LOT of combat in the game... which isn't necessarily a good thing. It was also a bit too linear for my tastes, with the only time you strayed from the path they lay out for you is when you go back to get powerups, and even then they try to send you back to places you've been for some in-game reason...

Yes, I admit they were waaaaaaay too linear with things. I think the creators are starting to focus more on new generation gamers who like being told every single thing they need to do, in stead of on the classic metroid players that are used to the exploring that's needed in order to progress. But like the DS, the Wii is starting to just add gimmicks to games, but don't get me wrong I think the games are really fun but at the same time think the pressure of Nintendo wanting developers to include wiimote functionality is a bit "blah" in my opinion. So less puzzles seems kinda weird to me though, because they probably could have come up with better things to do with the wiimote other than the door mechanisms and the soldering crap.

And now that I think about it I suppose you're right about the mysterious thing. I do enjoy being confused and curious at times but I seem to sway and sometimes I hate it more than anything XD

Also, I dunno, I still kind of wanted a planet escape thing because seeing Samus escape without even showing her ship getting away from the planet really pissed me off. And that shot of her giving the thumbs up was so god damn cheesy >_< IMO she's too "social" in this one.

Which is why I chose to go with Veteran mode on my first run and why it's best to use the Advanced sensitivity setting with Free Aim on, and most importantly, I turn the Hint System OFF.

But in the case of Retro Studios and their effort in making a Metroid game with something new, I think for the most part they've done wonderfully with the Prime series. There are a lot of things they introduced that are absolutely BRILLIANT. The first person perspective is very well done, scanning and suits that are not simply just a colour change are another thing. Also trying to mix things up with stuff like Hyper mode was a nice change too.

Also, a thing to consider is that you should treat the Prime sub-series as one big game rather than 3 separate games. Corruption was the epic finish to the Introductory story shaping Prime and the subdued and mysterious Echoes... So keeping that in mind, the more combat orientated and less puzzle based style of Corruption makes sense.

They may have done a few things I disapproved of, but Retro Studios did a lot of things which I really do like.

Quote:But like the DS, the Wii is starting to just add gimmicks to games, but don't get me wrong I think the games are really fun but at the same time think the pressure of Nintendo wanting developers to include wiimote functionality is a bit "blah" in my opinion.
This part I don't agree with. Nothing about MP3C's controls felt gimmicky at all, it all felt very natural and, while it's not an FPS, it is a stepping stone to perfect FPS control functionality on Wii. Also, Nintendo isn't putting any pressure on developers. If developers don't want to work with the Wiimote or the DS's touchscreen, they don't have to. There are some games that have Wiimote functionality but allow you to use the Classic Controller and/or GameCube controller too. Also, some games don't even bother to use the accelerometers and IR pointer at all. A great example of this is Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Nintendo doesn't even add those new functionalities into certain games in its own line-up.

Quote:So less puzzles seems kinda weird to me though, because they probably could have come up with better things to do with the wiimote other than the door mechanisms and the soldering crap.
This kinda contradicts what you said last, you complained about Nintendo forcing the use of Wiimote functionality but then you want more of it...

I thought they did quite well with the Wiimote functionality. In past Metroid games, to get to new areas and get items you simply had to get a new weapon upgrade or something and then go back to that area, shoot a door, blow up a rock or something and you've got the powerup or got into the new area. In Corruption they make you actually do some more with the upgrade you just found. Soldering with the plasma beam was great and using the X-Ray visor to work the pirate consoles made sense... cause think about it... since when did the Pirates see the exact same spectrum as humans do?...

Also, as I mentioned before, the biggest part of this game in terms of controls is the IR pointing. When you switch to Advanced sensitivity mode with Free Aim mode on, things get so fucking awesome. You may take it for granted, but this level of simplicity = usability is what makes Wii so damn great. It's such a simple concept, but that alone is what made this game feel like sex to control.

Quote:Also, I dunno, I still kind of wanted a planet escape thing because seeing Samus escape without even showing her ship getting away from the planet really pissed me off. And that shot of her giving the thumbs up was so god damn cheesy >_< IMO she's too "social" in this one.
I agree that Samus is too social in this game and that the thumbs up was kinda cheesy. When it comes to endings, I liked the Echoes one best with the Luminoth bowing to Samus as she walks pass. Then the camera set in a position where you just see the back of Samus as she walks out of the hall and into the light and she just gives this "catch ya around" gesture which was so awesome XD

I can understand why they didn't have an escape sequence or show her escape from Phaaze, simply because it's impossible for her to escape when she was so deep under the planet... seriously, look at the map next time you're on Phaaze. In reality, she never would've been able to escape at all XD But the whole escape sequence thing isn't that necessary. I know that it's in pretty much every other Metroid game, but at least some of those had something interesting occur in them... like in Echoes, the final battle with Dark Samus during the countdown, and in Fusion the surprise appearance of an Omega Metroid and SA-X sacrificing itself to defeat a common enemy... Corruption did have a couple of countdown moments, though not tradition clocked countdown moments... the first was on Norion and then the other was on Elysia... I've never tested whether the "clock" can run out on either situation, but I'll test it some time soon and let ya know whether they are scripted or if it is a true countdown event, but just without the clock.

Also, another thing I don't like in this game is her ship... it's awesome and all, but it seems to ignore continuity... you see, the ship she used in Echoes is the exact same ship she used in Metroid II Return of Samus and Super Metroid and at the start of Metroid Fusion when that ship finally got destroyed... so then when did the ship used in Corruption suddenly show up and why did she only use it for this game when she switches back to her old ship in Metroid II?

I'm sure Nintendo will probably make a remake of Metroid II that somehow explains this (or possibly another game that occurs between Corruption and Metroid II), but I think Retro should've done something cool to explain this... for example, when Samus got to Phaaze, the ship she uses in Corrupution could've crashed and is beyond repair which meant, at the time, that she was stuck on the planet... then at the end of the game when it is time to escape, suddenly the other ship, the one that she used in Echoes, Return of Samus and Super Metroid appears, she gets in and jets out of there. Oh well.

Haha, wow I do like looking at my contradictions and laughing at myself. But I do waver between liking wiimote functionality and not liking it so much. I guess it's just that it's so new I'm not used to it yet and around the 1 year mark (for me) I'll be completely used to it......or something.

Either way, watching someone who has mastered every classic mario game play MP3C is the most hilarious thing ever XD

Personally, I love everything Wii has to offer, failures and successes alike. The fact that you have developers TRYING to do something new is what I love the most. In the end, as much as I like button combinations and analog sticks and all that kinda jazz, I do want new control options and Wii is the only console to give it to me.

Stick Out Tongue I have mastered every classic mario game and I play MP3C Stick Out Tongue And I'm damn good at it all so XP lol

Anywayz, I'm playing through hypermode difficulty right now and I'm upto making the nuke to destroy the Elysia seed's shield. I love the fact that you have to make a bomb in this game lol, and the way they did it is pretty clever, it's kind of like a puzzle in itself... speaking of which. You know, we all expect lots of puzzles to be in Prime games, but really, puzzles were only just introduce into Prime games. The 2D Metroid games never had any of these kinds of puzzles to solve but we demand them because it's more Metroid that way... kinda makes you think, eh XD

Well, so have I, but seeing my dad, who I used to look up to when it came to video games, suck so bad can entertain for hours on end. "No dad, lock on so you can- wait wait wait, he's over there......yea, now press Z....um, strafe so you don't get owned.....point it at the TV so you can aim.....k, you only lost one whole energy tank to fight that one pirate, but yea sure, you did fine." XD

I should really start working on my hypermode run again >_>

XD I hate that kind of thing... I mean watching other people play when they're obviously terrible at it. I remember watching this video of some guy playing Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition on youtube and he sucked so damn much XD I couldn't stand it, it was torture.

I guess it is annoying sometimes, especially when I had to babysit him through Twilight Princess. Luckily me and my sister take turns helping him so it doesn't get too annoying too quickly.

I find it strange how some people can somehow figure it all out, but others can't... my nephew plays videogames, but he really sucks at them while other kids his age are really good at them, I mean for kids.

@Lynk: Some people just aren't coordinated enough to do such things. Although I admit I do find it strange when a pro footballer (american football and british football combined) can't seem to find the skills to play a game based on their sport.

I know that some people aren't coordinated enough... it's just he would've learnt by now... he plays A LOT of videogames since I gave him my old N64 and he bought a Wii because I have one.

The one thing that pisses me off about MP3C... Friend Vouchers... now, I can understand the thinking behind it, the whole online community thing, working together with friends to unlock stuff... yay.

But it's stupid.

And the thing that makes it even more stupid is that it is very much conditional. To unlock the really good extras in the game, you have to have a friend send you friend credits... the problem is that it's region locked... PAL Wii users can only exchange vouchers with other PAL Wii users and cannot exchange them with NTSC Wii users... WELL DONE, you have successfully made a useless feature COMPLETELY useless.

However, I am a resourceful person. If I can't find anyone online to exchange vouchers with... I don't have to. My nephew has a Wii, I could simply borrow it for a day, start a MP3C game file and earn at least 15 vouchers through the game (which is pretty easy to do) and simply go online with it and send the vouchers to MY Wii to unlock all of the extras that require the friend credits.

The ironic thing is that it's easier to do this than it is to find someone on the net to exchange these damned vouchers with... I mean it would've been easy if there was no region lock on these vouchers since I know a tonne of people who would've helped me out... sadly they all live in the US, great.
