This came to mind after reading an interesting post from the animesuki forums. I assume all of us find it funny when a girl beats up a guy in slapstick comedy anime but are there many animes that has a guy doing it to a girl instead?

It's funny about the whole gender equality issue here as it'd certainly raise some interesting points about women using violence against men which rarely gets discussed while men using violence against women is a huge no no.

i agree, i bet they would try to get anime banned or something if men started doing it in the shows, they would probably say it will make the people watching the shows more prone to domestic violence or something stupid

I'm a gentle man and I think all men are ( ignore the 3 words before this parenthesis ) or should be. if fatally occured in a girl violence, we're talking a completely diferent topic snd that will not be ignored. Kim and I had an interesting conversation that relates to this. Women raping guys... now most people would laugh at the very idea, but it does happen and it's more common than anyone thinks it is.

But on this subject, it's never funny when a man hits a women because a guy usually has some hard hitting power behind that hit that can do some serious damage... A woman hitting a guy isn't that big a deal because compared to what a guy could do, it's just a baby tap... so in the end, it works with for comedic value.

On the other hand, you have animes where there are women who are trained fighters/soldiers/etc. In those animes there is no sexual bias, kill or be killed, no matter who or what you are.

Interesting...would an age difference between the man and woman be a factor? E.g. a guy aged about 12 years old beating up an 18 year old girl for comedic value?

I'm pretty sure I have seen in some anime where a little boy is trying to hit a girl older than him but failing badly to hurt her... I think it really is a mtter of overall strength. If you try to be violent against someone but don't have the strength to do any serious damage, then it's funny.

I just remembered one scene in FMP fumoffu where Kaname punches this boy in the jaw who was much younger than her and it was pretty well executed for comedy. I think balancing part of that scene which allowed Kaname to get away with it is because he grabbed one of her breast. Had he not done that, then I guess it'd be pretty wrong to just punch that kid for no reason lol.

You also have to take into account that this is Japan we're talking about... in real life a Japanese girl would usually just take that kind of abuse silently. In an anime it's almost like they're trying to encourage girls to punch out a guy who tries to grab them... and it would certainly help if they actually did.

That's another interesting point you made but it's weird that in most anime, the male character accidentally touches them or didn't really have any intention of doing so but still get walloped in the end. I think part of it has to do with culture.

Love Hina is a big example of the male protagonist constantly getting beat up by the girls even though 99% of those breast/perverted incidents are caused by accidents yet we still find it funny to see him cop the blow.

Apparantly the "good" guys are afraid of girls in that way and the ones who aren't are filthy perverts. It's frustrating though, watching animes with guys like that, I can't relate to them at all XD lol

I think the major thing here is whether its for comedic value or if its violence. But I can't recall seeing a guy hitting a girl in anime comedically.

Thats all it boils down too, the comedy value, the poor guy always gets the slap over an unintentional accident like seeing the girl in her underwear or looking at her bum when the wind blows her skirt up etc.
It's funny, especially when the poor fella has a bright red handprint left on his face.Makes me laugh every time

Actually there is an attempted rape scene in Akira where a woman is assaulted by a guy if I remember correctly and the girl does get hit rather graphically. My impression of that scene was that it was very well done and the effect on the characters was as expected.

Then there was the whole Hikaru slapping Minnay thing in Macross...

That moment with Hikaru and Minmay was a very emotionally charged scene, and the general audience agrees that she needed to be slapped then since she was being hysterical.

As for the Akira scene, Darky was talking about the supposed comedic value of such things, not the reality or any serious moment when you kind of expect something like it to happen.

It's apparently very funny because he's an adult and she's a little hyperactive kid and she can still hold her own. Anyone else know the scene? I wasn't paying too much attention at the time.

Yeah, I've seen it. This kind of interaction goes on for a few episodes, she hits him, he hits her, and it's OK 'cause the show is comedy...and also because the guy is supposed to be a bit of a jerk.

Males slapping females typically is used as either a form of discipline, wake up call, or just a sort of "Hey wake up and stop acting stupid!" as well as form of dramatization to emphasize disgust at an action.

Females slapping males has the same effect, except that upon the male its not viewed as consequential, just her way of getting to the thick headed subject she slapped.

Take in part to Gundam (here I go) Slapping is used everywhere, including punching. Mostly it is used as a from of discipline or wake up call regardless of sex of the characters.


As for Love Hina, that is slapstick in a perversely abused use of it.

It may be just that writers are becoming more sensitive to cultural taboos. Yoko in Gurren laggan is a clearly good example of a confidant female that doesn't phase when her body, chest or other wise comes in contact with another person or animal, while you may say that, possibly a female in question may be reserving her first deflowering to her preferred partner for him or her to experience.

Its also a case of sexual harassment. Women in Japan are starting to report such incidences in greater numbers than simply accepting it. Its the upwardly mobile female we are speaking of here. Of course, you have the girls that just don't care and wouldn't mind if the guy was there or not. typically that would mean a great amount of trust between them.

But in anime and real life, either the girl doesn't care, the girl would smack you, or she would ride the all female train car/line to work.

If you look up "Hana's Holiday" By Saigado, I think there would be a good example (all though its an alternative one) to how a woman may address this sort of thing.

Generally a man slapping a woman is either crossed at sexual harassment, abuse, or, disgust, distaste, a wake up call, Unless it was some sort of dominance play, that is another question.

Mind you Lynk, you have to recall the crumbling Male dichotomy, as well as women not being afraid of filing sexual harassment reports and taking it upon them-selves to strike back in retaliation. Surely enough the gentlemanly form of chivalry has survived and served us this long has it?
