Macross zero finally accounts for all of the weird design flaws and just plain out of the question flight physics by adding a touch of realism. The F14 look 'a' like now makes sense, and aerodynamics are finally consistant, but then again what the hell did any of this matter back when we all first saw "robotech?"
It's weird, cause now I watch any series with jet fighters and I'm drawn to pick out every little flaw, regardless of how small. The launch sequence from the deck of the aircraft carrier is as close as you can get to real life, which wins points in my book.
YAY IM A DORK! lol.
The first VF-1 enters service a month from now! Yay Stonewell/Belcom!
No talk about Robotech in a Macross thread *shakes fist*

Hehehe. Who, me? A wiseguy?
But seriously, I don't know the best place to buy them other than just surfing around and seeing who has the best prices. I haven't bought any anime online myself in a while, so I don't know who has the best deals out there today.

This thread rules, I love the original Macross the best and even enjoyed the movie "Do You Remember Love?" The characters were dramatic, the action was great, and the mechanical designs were great.
And I think Mari Iijima put out some great vocal performances on the soundtrack to top it off (she is still hot!). Plus her music career's pretty cool too, and it's great to see she's okay with people mostly knowing her as Minmay finally.
Macross Plus was my first taste, and that was flashy has heck, and that also had a great soundtrack (this time from vet Yoko Kanno).
Then I got to see Macross II, which while it was a weaker Macross series for me, still retained an interesting story and featured a worthy soundtrack (love "Riding in Your Valkyrie").

Watched Macross Plus and I was impressed. Good story, liked the animation, pretty slick stuff. Definately going to have to get the rest now. Heh add another Macross fan to ranks!
Now's a good time to watch the original series. Just note, it was made in 1982 and is a TV show, the animation is going to be very primitive and isn't going to be anywhere near as amazing as Plus. To add to that, you have that good ol' 80s cheesiness to it, but it's a classic. Once you start, you should not stop, continue on and then suddenly everything will just click together so well and you'll cry for more by the end... rwar.

Boy, there are a lot of animation mistakes in there!.

Aye , when I get some time I'll see if I can rent it from the store firstly, I found the boxsets on Amazon anyways so I just know I'll end up buying them at the end of the month.
I like 80's cheesiness
On the subject of the ADV release of Macross VS the AnimEigo release, there are a few things you should know.
- Both releases use the same remastered video so they look exactly the same.
- The AnimEigo release only comes in Japanese with no English version.
- The ADV release comes with an exclusive English version, not Robotech, this is Macross, the way it was meant to be in English. A very cool bonus is that they got Maji Iijima, the seiyuu of Lynn Minmay, to reprise her role in the English version.
- The AnimEigo release has superior audio, it is presented in dual mono with the original authentic soundtrack used when the series was on TV.
- The ADV release has the Japanese in stereo and the English version is in 5.1... The BIG downside is that this version doesn't use the absolute original soundtrack, so the sound effects aren't the way they're meant to be. Example: The gunpods sound more like lasers rather than having that "buzz-saw" sound.
- The AnimEigo release has quite a few nice extras, there are a couple of extras which you can't get on the ADV release.
- The ADV release comes with some of the same extras but also has a lot of exclusive content.

I've got the Animeigo sets, they're a good company and the remastered visuals were enough to send me in tears of appreciation.
Sounds like there isn't enough for me to update to the ADV release, but for anyone who hasn't seen/owned Macross it's definitely a great sounding deal. Actually, Mari doing the dub almost makes me want to impulsively seek it out, but again, I'm positive that I'll be just a finely served with my current set.
I also watched the commentary on my Macross set, always cool to have that as an extra.
And there can never be too much Macross!

Macross to Metallica! Awesome, double the old school action!

I know Lynk likes it, but I found that I didn't like the dub very much (Mari is probably the best part though). A lot of the voices I thought were kind nasally and whiny sounding. I think part of it is that I have a preconceived notion of what the characters should sound like, partially correctly from the original Japanese, and partially incorrectly from Robotech. So that isn't entirely ADV's fault. But in any event, I found that when I tried to watch the English dub I ended up going back to the subs every time.
YMMV.
I think they successfully emulated the 80s cheesiness. That's why it's such a good English version. It's not 80s JAPANESE cheesiness, but it IS 80s cheesiness. And yeah, all of the voices were very different from the Japanese ones, and let's face it and be extremely blunt here. Mari's voice acting on a purely analytical stand point comes to one conclusion. She sucks, she was the worst voice actor there. You know it just as well as I know it if you put aside the fact that it's Mari reprising her role. But when you put your own twist to it, Mari was great, Vic was great, Monica was great, it was all damn good and cheesy. It was like you're back in the 80s!

Macross seems like a cross between Transformers and Mobile Suit Gundam.
Macross exists because of Gundam, the pre-production stuff was very close to what Gundam was, but a lot of things changed over that period of time and when Super Dimension Fortress Macross was aired on Japanese TV in 1982, it was something completely new and different. Transformers came after Macross.
Overall though, Macross may have transforming mecha, but it's more background material to the famous love triangle between Hikaru, Minmay and Misa and the story of love and culture above war.

Actually the better version of this would be what we did back in 1986. Put in Metallica's Master of Puppets song "Disposible Heroes" and play it during the first battle scene in the movie "Macross: DYRL".
That makes for an awesome AMV IMO.
