I just saw something really interesting on the Madman Entertainment forum which I think you should all see...

The Herald Sun on the 27/7/07 posted an article in their arts section about an auction that took place in South Yarra on the 28/7/07. Why is this of interest? Well below you will see an image from the series that Madman will be releasing in September known as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. You may have recognised it from all the hoopla we've been creating about the upcoming dance contests

This is rather old to me, I saw it in the Hearld Sun a few weeks ago and was kinda surprised to find a picture of Haruhi in painting but then again, there was another issue of MX that featured a very small line of the anime and manga convention in Tokyo.

I didn't really care that much about that article of the painting though and kept quiet about it, obviously some of the more hardcore anime watchers picked up on it and decided to post about it.

Looks pretty blatant to me. The buyer must have been a pretty huge Haruhi fan to buy that, even I wouldn't spend that much on Haruhi. :3

When I saw this, I thought, great, I can just copy other peoples pictures and do them slightly differently and I can get paid for it. Though darky, it isn't just an issue for "hardcore fans"...

Yeah really I wish I could photoshop some Haruhi pics and sell them for thousands too.

You're right, the issue of copyright abuse is certainly on the agenda regarding this but it's not only that. It's also the problem of people being stupid enough to pay such a high amount for these types of unofficial works where the creator blatantly rips off other people's works. However, we're not sure if the buyer even knows about this so they could've possibly been conned into thinking they're getting an official painting.

Then again, are there any information of where the money will go? Was this auction for a charity or benefit cause?

EDIT: Just read the small line that all proceeds of the auction money will go to medical researching, so the artist who painted that isn't really getting the money and since it's for a supposedly good cause, it probably explains the high price.

Meh~ some people place a plain white toilet on some clay mount and call it art. And get paid.
