I love these games, especially Alone in the Dark 2. They are horror related adventures featuring a paranormal investigator named Edward Carnby. He has starred in every game thus far, except Jack in the Dark, which may or may not be canon.
Anyway, the original Alone in the Dark came out way back in 1992 and paved way for similar games, such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The first game is about a mansion called Derceto and your full exploration of the house brings you close encounters with dangerous traps and monsters.
Alone in the Dark 2 isn't really a horror game, but rather an action game. Your mission is to rescue a little girl named Grace Saunders, who was kidnapped by a gang of pirates. You begin the game in a hedge maze, before you finally end up inside the heavily guarded mansion of One Eyed Jack. Later on, you have to play as Grace Saunders, who is more vulnerable than Carnby due to the fact she cannot run very fast, or open doors.
Jack in the Dark is a 5 minute game that was included with some copies of the first game. You control Grace Saunders in a witch costume, as she tries to save Santa Claus from evil toys inside a spooky toy shop. There is no direct combat involved. Instead, you have to read a book about the toys and find out how to defend yourself.
The third game was the last game in the series to use the outdated looking polygonal models. But I consider Alone in the Dark 3 to be the most difficult game in the saga, even though you now have the option to skip certain parts of the game. Edward Carnby is back as the main character and this time he goes to a creepy western town to find his good friend, Emily Hartwood. Eventually he is transformed into a puma and must complete a small task before he becomes human again.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is considered by many gamers to be another rip off of the Resident Evil series. There are very weak looking zombies in the game, which is actually unrelated to the original trilogy. Edward Carnby is much more darker and sarcastic than he was in the first three games, but he may not be the same Edward Carnby because the game takes place almost a century after the original trilogy.
Alone in the Dark 4 was its sub name, although it isn't really a sequel. It is more of an update to coincide with the survival horror genre. The other main character in the game is Aline Cedrac. Her mission can be played as a stand alone adventure, but there are more puzzles and difficult situations than Carnby would have to contend with.
The story is basically a revenge tale, but both characters must also prevent the apocalypse. Edward Carnby has a gun from the beginning, but Aline must rely on her flashlight to scare away the unusual monsters that are now living on Shadow Island.
Much of the game takes place in a large house belonging to the crazy Morton family. You will encounter members of the family while exploring the mansion. They have been conducting bizare experiments and by doing so, they have been successful in spawning Creatures of Darkness, or whatever they are known by.
The game was followed by the movie. But the movie was directed by Uwe Boll and was not a commercial success. Although it is considered canon by some fans, I don't see why they would base it off of the games. It's truly not a very good film at all.
The next game will be titled Alone in the Dark: Near Death Investigation and it will be set in New York City. There will be new chapters that can be downloaded for use with the Xbox 360. I do not know the plot details yet, but I heard that Carnby may have to quietly hot wire cars to get past dangerous enemies. This will prove to be an all new and exciting feature.
Can't hardly wait.
