Well lets see.... Since C3F closed and reopened I have still been in the same job, I've been with the company for over 4 years. However with in a few months, the quiet branch were I worked will be closing for the last time. The reason for this is that a nearby branch, which is just down the road is just near finishing a rebuild. Once this branch opens, my stores will cease its trading.

What I have now, is a decision to make..... Should I move to this new store or a nearby branch. The reason is that while I need the money like anyone else, I don't want to be stuck in this retail job forever.

Next month I'm using up the last of my hoilday time, and I'm planning on setting up a website to display my photographic work. But durring this time I must make the hard decison on what to do. While I'm trying to display my photographic work since college, I'm still paying off my college fee's.

I been looking at my choices, there are four other stores in the company nearby...

First is Ewell, It's the areas current Mega store, being the largest in the region and soon may be replaced by the new store. However I have worked one day there, when they needed extre staff to spruce up the store for an Exec visit. While the pay is the highest market rate for the company, they loses alot of staff dues to the high stress level.

Pro's
Easy to get too by public transport, Better rate of pay, lot more staff.
Con's
Tons of customers, Larger Store, Stricter rules,

Next is Wimbledon another new local store that reopened last year after a fire, This one better as I know a few members of staff from when they were closed, as they worked in other stores.

Pro's
Two stops on the train, better rate of pay, Know some staff there,
Con's
Bigger Customer ranges, No place to eat out locally, need to bring pack lunch, Asshole of Senior Sales manager I know works there [Not worth knowing him]

Up next is Merton, very simular to My current store in size and location.

Pro's
Smaller store, closer kit of staff, One bus needed,
Con's
Bad bus route, Unknown rate of pay, know no staff there, location is somewhat distance away.

Next is Kingston which is due to open in Easter

Pro's
New Store, Better rate of Pay, Easy to reach location, Know some Staff members.
Con's
New Management, Size to rival Ewell, Lot more customers.

So now it the hard choice, Which store to go for.... I know I won't be chosing Ewell, There current managment is bollacks..... I know this might be the oddest choice, But I look the like of Merton the best. It's very simular to New Malden my current store.....

Well since all the pros that say "better rate of pay" are larger stores, I'd find out the exact rate (if you haven't already) and pick one of those. But that's just me, I'd sacrifice having to work for a big store if you get well paid.

The reasons the bigger stores have higher rates is because, they loses their staff alot. I worked at Ewell for one day, The pay may be better, but the stress isn't worth it, Plus their strict with Time keeping. You have to log in and out for your fiftheen minute tea break. Not worth it....

I see. Well then I guess it just depends on how bad you want the money for whether you work at one of the larger stores, or sacrifice a little bit for a less-stressful job.

Well I have to wait and see what the market rate the pay is at the other store before I make a firm decision.

I'm just curious, but what would your ideal profession (the one you went to college for, or else the one you want to do) be? If it has to do with photography then -- while I realize that everybody needs money to survive -- it might be better if you didn't take another job in retail. I obviously don't pretend to know your situation, or have thought about it more than you but, like you said, you might end up in this job forever, and if the wages are just right, they could keep you in that constant state of uncertainty -- "Do I leave for my true calling with just enough money to eat and have a place to stay for the next week, or do I keep working here for the rest of my life" type o thing. Anyways yeah -- what did you study in college?

Hell I'm looking for a better job at the moment now, I know I want to find a better job. But there isn't anything I can find related around here at the moment. After this current issue with the closer of my store, I have decided to take my seatch into the city and have a look there.

But, in your current situation, your better off moving to a bigger, more secure store. Bigger stores tend to put a lot of those smaller ones out of business (Look at Wal-Mart here in the US). If the pays good, and the hours are ok, go for it.

My parents keep bugging me about moving into a bigger store.
For the last 10 years now, I have been working in small (>5 Employees).

The things that I like about that compaired to big companies are :-

* Less likely that the boss is going to fire as the boss there it normally a lot more flexible. Still, this does not give you an excuse to start stealing stuff from work, or download porn or WaReZ on your workstation.

* Less instore politics. I have seem a few freinds of mine get pushed around because of the instore politics and HR Favoritism. I remember being on the receiving end a few time during my after school job as they kept changing the store managers around.

* Not Getting moved around from location to location. This really sux if you don't own a car.

* For expereinced gained from the job. Like I was hired as sales and techsupport for my last 2 jobs. However if I put in all my other duties, I am effectively an assistant manager.

Things I don't like about small companies :-
* You normally don't have some one else that can take your place. This make getting time off, or calling in sick hard as normally no one else knows have to do your job. Or at least do it aswell as you do. I BSed to my boss christmas break saying that I will be out of the country as I did not want another holiday where the some one was calling me up. Or trying to get in for an hour or 2.

* With the more experence gained, there is a lot more responibility put on you too.

* Lack of internal support. If some thing goes wrong, there is not many other people to turn to. I do remember this being the reason why I quit my 2nd computer job.


Currently, i am inbetween looking for new work, or staying put. I was about to quit last year. However this year, my boss has offered some really interesting opportunities. One of them is more pay, however there is a opportunity for me to get a really cheap rent (AU$100 pw) in a location with normally starts at about AU$350pw. This is due to the new location for my work having an upstars appartment.

Well taking career studies helps on ways to get a job. See if you know anyone that has a summer job and see if they can get you into it.. :sweat:
I'm hoping my brother helps me get one. Also resumes are one tool. If you do find a place you know visit it every now and then and drop off your resume all that. LIke my brother made like 40 resumes. xp He has like... two jobs... but any ways good luck just keep trying is all I can say.

I work at a shop called Instore in Edinburgh. We sell garden stuff, sweets, cushions, clothes, furniture and general bits and bobs. I will probably be sacked soon, because I keep making mistakes with the till.
