Howdy people!
Well, i've taken a look at the japanese/european/australian (all together since they follow the same pattern when it comes to all the differences from the US version) version of Metroid Prime for NGC.
Of course, they work pretty much like the difference from the japanese/us squaresoft/square-enix game line, since the japanese is released first, working as a 'beta version' and the US version is considered the 'final version'. But when it comes to metroid, as you all know, the us version comes first, and then the japanese/european/australian.
The differences are quite remarkable. From cut scenes to even adding alarm voices to Samus' suit. Bravo!
BUT WHY THE HELL THAT NARRATOR EXISTS?
......... it sounds like those crappy movier trailler's narrators and it spoils all the fun and/or whatever else that rested when playing the game. Maybe if that guy went a little easier on the massive amount of cigarrets consumed by each HOUR it would be less painful to hear... Gosh, Metroid is not Resident Evil for anyone's sake (and i love the RE series if you mind)!
i just wanted to say that and let the world know my opinion. thank you. And also know if someone else feels the same =p
XD

A lot more was changed from the initial US version, there were a lot of log entries that were updated. The log entries in the US version actually don't make that much sense, for example in the US version the Space Pirates breeched the barrier protecting the Impact Crater and had already encountered Metroid Prime. In the updated version, this was not so, the Pirates knew of Metroid Prime's existence as an entity within the Impact Crater, but hadn't encountered it.
But in the case of the narrator who only speaks at the very beginning and the very end. I liked it, and know a lot of Metroid fans who liked it. It fit the very mystical view of how the Chozo saw Samus. A lot of people who bought the initial release of Metroid Prime in the US are jealous that we have it and they don't.
But seeing as you don't like voices happening in Metroid, you're definately not going to like Metroid Prime 3 Corruption which features heavy voice acting by any character you come across. But don't worry, Samus remains mute, thank god.
Still I don't see how that narrator spoiled the fun, he was only at the start and end and when you transport to and from the Impact Crater, saying "Impact Crater" and "Tallon Overworld"
Oh and here's a bonus for ya Rach, a shot of Samus in Super Smash Bros Brawl

And we all know Lynk likes the vocal females
*looks @ samus screenshot* You know when I look at it, it almost looks like Samus is in the Shadow Moses base from Metal Gear Solid... maybe they're pairing her up with Snake Which makes sense since Samus in the Zero Suit part of Zero Mission required you to use stealth.... and none of you know what I'm talking about huh XD *points @ link*

Yep, i'm aware of that. That's one of the reasons why i run after the european or japanese versions of the games (like my Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. But one of the BEST PARTS they took from the game XP "i wonder how many players will see this?" Hahahah!)

Bah, must be me and my friends only then. But that made the game so Resident Evil like. I'm happy that in the end, i've got the US players choice just for not having that part.

Ba-baaaah! Got me wrong in this one, Lynky XD I love characters featuring voices. Featuring personality! That's why Fusion is my fav game from the metroid series.

=* Urk @ Fusion... It's funny though, you complain about the narrator in Prime reminding you too much of Resident Evil in a Metroid game, when Fusion is the furthest from a Metroid game a Metroid game has gotten so far aside from Hunters.

Actually they were blonde, it was just that it was being recorded with a camera looking at an LCD TV so a lot of the colours being displayed were off and a lot of the colour and detail in the shadowy areas were discoloured.

well, but i don't imagine Adam's voice in fusion to be like... a typical movie trailer narrator. Like i said, those that are much like chaminees (or whatever you spell that, thank you XD). And he doesn't get those cliche whatever lines in the game XP
There are many things that i like in fusion. I like that it gives a certain air of "the end" to the story.
Oh yeah, and the part straight from SNES' Super Metroid ending, that you save those little green fellas outhere and they come up in the bio lab facility and they save you in the end, that was pretty cool in my opinion. Toukan koukan, eh? XD
And for all that i love in Samus, but i was so happy to see some lines from her. Some personality. Not just a killing machine. Oh wait, that's Sa-X. Haha oh, enought with the jokes. But really. After all those years, i really wanted to know what she was actually like. What she thinks and everything. She was such an interesting character that had no development at all (ok, not exactly AT ALL, but you're following me here or i'm getting everyone very confused?), i was really glad to see that script in fusion.
aah, thanks for the video info =D

Actually, it gives a certain air of "the end...? of course not, there are so many loose ends"... We (the general Metroid fanbase) are all craving for a Metroid set after Fusion because so much is in the air that hasn't been resolved. It was a very bad way to end for the fact that Nintendo hasn't made a sequel for it.
Quote:Oh yeah, and the part straight from SNES' Super Metroid ending, that you save those little green fellas outhere and they come up in the bio lab facility and they save you in the end, that was pretty cool in my opinion. Toukan koukan, eh? XD
Yeah, I liked that part too. Samus saves them on Zebes, they save Samus in Fusion. Another good thing about Fusion was the moments you had with the SA-X. And I didn't mind the moments in the elevators when Samus had her "thoughts" like she did at the start of Super Metroid.
But the thing I hated was Adam, being told where to go and what to do by him, etc. I wasn't exploring on my own, I was being given instructions on where to go which pissed me off.
They tried to do the same in Zero Mission with a toned down version with the Chozo statues that "guided" you... I hated that too.

Samus had a lot of development before Fusion, all it took was a few pieces of text at the start of Super Metroid and then the rest of the development was through her actions in the game. She is a character who speaks loudest with her actions and in the final moments in Super Metroid, no words were spoken, but everything was absolutely clear in what kind of person she was.
They did this very well in Zero Mission, aside from guiding you too much in the game, the story was a short piece of text at the start of the game, and then actions and events during the game. You learnt a hell of a lot about Samus through images and got a clear understanding of who she was a lot better than what you got with her in Fusion. That one drawing in the Chozo Temple that Samus drew as a child of her and the Chozo elder told me more about her than the entire script of Fusion.

Well, ZM came after Fusion, so yep, they had to catch a lot of ground to get the "metroid like atmosphere' back. I loved the drawing XD (that was also my phone's background image but oh like anyone care =p). Of course the cut scenes were great. The line art specially XD
but i like the reading part in the fusion game. At least, when i'm working alone, i do think about a lot of things to keep myself on track of what i'm doing.
i really hated the part of being controlled by the game as where you're going and all, but it kept me thinking later and it makes pretty much sense:
After all, you hire someone, and you gotta be his/her supervisor. You won't simply leave a killing machine do whatever he/she wants in your precious little lab (that gets a 'lil' boom in the end but oh well XP). She's done tons of missions that we don't even have a clear idea, and each misson sure has its profile. I'd like to see more games featuring her past missions and what was to work with those people and who were those people as well!

Well of course it makes sense, when you make a game where you want to guide the player through specific paths you make a way for it to make sense in the context of the game.
However, as soon as you change the game back to its original Metroid-ness by taking out the guidance feature, Adam becomes useless and just a wasted addition.
Here's a scenario, the game's story is exactly the same, except it has no Adam and no guidance at all. Everyone on the station is killed, the main computer is damaged, Samus is on her own, alone on this station which holds a lot of secrets. Samus finds out on her own that the SA-X exists, she then, on her own, investigates the X parasites and works out how to deal with them, going through section by section, discovering and creating her own paths, etc. Players would've felt free to explore the station and not be bugged at all by Adam trying to tell you what to do.

ahm.... i like the fusion idea =x
you know
for a change.
otherwise is like the street fighter series (or any other fighting games). Only the title changes (and yep, i like street fighter as you've seen in my avatars).
but it's nice to talk like this with someone =3 people here don't care much about metroid, except one or another (like my brother or my boyfriend and some of his friends)
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
Change is good... Zero Mission was a good change (if you pretend the guidance feature doesn't exist lol). Prime was a brilliant change... Fusion, not so good.
I have the same problem with Fire Emblem... there doesn't seem to be enough FE fans around to talk with lol.

FE rocks but :3
Nah, i'm good with it. Fusion is my fav. Followed by zero mission. Then Super Metroid and the Prime Series in a split 3rd.
but one thing that i don't quite understand,
the first metroid was mainly (or at all) made in japan, by Gunpei Yokoi's group and all. There's even the system disk management that they had to switch to passwords when the US version came.
But already in metroid II, the producing and design cast were still the Nintendo JP cast. But it was always released in the US first. I thought that after metroid II, the lead producing team was the american one. I'm confused now!
Anyway, who's the definetely lead team in the Metroid II, Fusion and Zero Mission games?
About the Prime series, not one question, since retro studios makes everything very clear since the start screen hahaha =p
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission were developed by R&D1 and Intelligent Systems developed Metroid II. Gunpei Yokoi lead the teams that developed Metroid, Metroid II and Super Metroid before he died. So all of the games mentioned are purely made in Japan.
The Metroid Prime Trilogy, as everyone knows is made by Retro Studios, a development studio Nintendo owns in full and is based in Texas. At the time Retro was developing like 3-5 other games but Nintendo cancelled all of their other projects and Shiggy came in and yelled at them to get their act together so they could develop a Metroid game... XD
Metroid Prime Hunters (though really it shouldn't have the "Prime" in there since it has nothing to do with the trilogy) was developed by Nintendo Software Technology (NST) who are based in Redmond (where Nintendo has its US headquarters.)
Metroid Prime Pinball for the DS was developed by Fuse Studios and they are based in the UK.
The reason why the US gets Metroid games first is because Metroid isn't very popular in Japan. Nintendo has tried to attract Japanaese interest by trying to add a little ses appeal to the series... it's the reason why the Fusion suit has more of a feminine touch to it and is the reason why Samus loses her suit in Zero Mission and you get to see her in her "Zero Suit"... I'm sure you've seen the Japanese ads for Fusion and Zero Mission lol XD

Yep, i've seen them! And i love'em X3 but oh well. That's me.
And thanks for telling me all this, lynk! it put my heart at ease haha! Really, i was pretty much confused.
And well... one of the things that i love the most in the fusion suit is exactly the 'anatomic' design. It's makin my life hell easier since i won't have to die in fiber glass from head to toes x_x
BTW LYNK
did you register your metroid prime games? i tried, but nintendo.com won't accept anyone outside the US and Canada =/
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
Oh, that's cause they're tracking US sales and trends. US and Canada are part of the same area and they track them together.
But speaking of the Fusion suit... wouldn't it be just as bad as the Varia suit if you were to cosplay it?... I mean unless you go really, really cheap with it XD

well, for the fusion suit, it's pretty simple actually. The helmet parts (and that shoulder thing that i dunno the name), the arm cannon and the 3 spheric cores in her back only that needs fiber glass work. That will look sweet.
The rest it's pretty simple work, since the armor is very organic like. The thing is: working with lycra cirré (not the one that i used for taki) and giving it 2 or 3 hands of latex paint on it, already in the right color mix. It gives a cool texture on it and its just... sweet to look at. You know Angelina Jolie's suit in Tomb Raider 2? Something like that, since that is pure latex. Of course, not forgetting the boots.
the problem with the varia suit is that it looks everything solid. Like the waist line and back. It's like tons of pure solid little squares and rectangles that make the yellow part of the suit. And that's something that can give you a nice headache. Working on that with solid e.v.a or fiber glass will kill me in one week, not to mention how hard it will get to move inside that thing! It's not like working on my friend's jango cosplay. Yes, the one from BakuTenshi
The body line must show up! It must be very feminine, even with those huge shoulders and stuff. Come on! Waist line, gentlemen! It's just THE feature on all of Samus' suits. So i'll do that later, once i sketch a good project.
well, the zero mission suit is piece of cake XD I can do that i one week.
Hair? hey, i could get the japanese excuse to make a brunette samus XD ahahh! but blondiness is not a problem.
King of fighters anyone?

too bad the pic was taken at night. So the blue contacts really don't show up. And the eyebrows look too dark XD but oh well, hahah! Those things happen XD

That's exactly the point XD King used to pass herself as a man in the early SNK games. Despite her 'secret' been told, she didn't abandon the guyish look. What is pretty cool in my opinion =p
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
I'm pretty sure the Fusion suit would be a lot more complicated than that... I've seen a couple of cosplay pics of Fusion suits that were lycra and fibre glass pieces and they weren't all that good... at all. It just looked like people in blue and yellow lycra and didn't look very power suit-like...
http://www.gamecritics.com/feature/artga.../art01.jpg
I'm sure once you can actually get it all done it'll turn out well though, but it's gonna take a lot more than most people seem to think it takes. I mean, it may not be a hard form suit like the Varia suit, but I reckon it'll just be just as hard to make and look convincing enough.
But anywayz... I can't wait for Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, but I also want another 2D Metroid game to be made after this, and I want the next 3D Metroid game not to be in Prime's first person perspective...

and don't go too hard on me, i really have trouble on trying to find out how to explain the process in english, so everything sounds plain and simple. I hardly know exactly the component names in portuguese, gosh.
and by the way, have you seen fusion version cosplays? wow, i never saw one. got any pictures?
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
I didn't mean it that way, I meant that the suit wouldn't be so simple to do convincingly just because it looks organic. And no, I don't have the pics with me, it was at a Nintendo forum that I saw them, didn't bother to save em. But the pics I saw do highlight my point... kinda wish I had em on hand to show you
