AKA "Games That Didn't Get Enough Love"

We all know them, games that where overshadowed by instant hits, covered by the eclipse of Halo or completly direguarded for their lack of something yet abundance of another thing.
Clearly though, we have those games that we like since they where so obscure, not as widely advertised as they are on TV by their publishers, often only known of by word of mouth or small game review magazines and postings on the internet.
The few games that we liked yet not the entire public has, the ones that could have been good and shined on their own rather than live in the shadow or just stay out of the way.

I guess I'll start first.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction

I liked this game for the kind of interactivity it has.
You can blow shit up. Anything from buildings, helicopters, tanks, jeeps, troop carriers, bunkers artillery.
You can shot anything, machine guns, grenade launchers, assualt riffles, sniper rifles, anti-armor missles, anti-air missles, RPGs, tanks, helicopter gunships, super guns, covert weapons, heavy weapons.
You can drive too, from vechiles, troop carriers, missle trucks, helicopter gunships, abrahms and many other russian and variant tanks, multiple Jeep vehicles, Hummers with turrets and stuff like that.
You can also hijack too, from tanks vehicles, helicopters and multiple other things too.

In reality, this may sound like GTA. Think again: you play a mercenary, where you are paid to kill and capture people rather than go beat people up for money they spill. You are a contract mercenary that works for private interests and governemnt interests, working for the private contract company Executive Operations AKA ExOps, gaining power for them in exchange for cash for your services, as well as tacking down a rouge military general and his subordinates and officers in a "Deck of 52" style check list, with the Ace of spaces being the head honcho of the checklist, worth $100,000,000 bounty alive, and subsequent commanders worth as comparably as much.


I think what made this game an overshadowed game was the fact that it came out around the still major fall-out of Halo 2 release. I think its a fantastic game in its own right and deserves its standing, yet deserves more lime-light than its credit given. And besides, the studio that created it, Pandemic, with publishing by Lucas Arts, even makes military simulators, so its pretty accurate to certain degrees in weapons too.


Anyone have any overshadowed games worthy of mentioning?

An old mech game called Omega Boost, for the Playstation. A kickass soundtrack, great controls and an awesome arcade feel. Also the first time I'd heard Steven Blum's voice ever... two years later I saw the bebop.

MLB 06: The Show

Essentially, this is probably the best baseball game out there. Maybe with the exception of the '07 version of it. Though, I don't own a PSP or a PS2 anymore, and don't intend to get a PS3 anytime soon. The graphics for this game were pretty good. The commentary was exceptionally well done, despite being a bit repetitive. The gameplay for this game was outstanding, especially for a baseball game. And every other baseball game I see and/or play seems to lack in most of the areas the MLB 06: The Show seem to excel in. This game seems to be overlooked since it is only Sony Playstation-exclusive. Now, only if they released it on the Xbox or the Wii.

It had amazing graphics, smooth gameplay and stuff that just...totally beat the crap out of every other rendered space RTS at the time, but unfortunately sub-par, yet popular titled games like Zero hour severly overwhelemed it. I remember seeing it on shelves.

I dont however, remember anyone who knew anything about RTS's talking about it.

Considering a few people didn't like the game in the means that it din't live up to the epicness of the original, I think it was far better designed shipwise than the original.

Dude, you are missing out on the Mods for HomeWorld 2, which are abundant. Its the one way homeworld has survived up to even now.

Oni is probably one of those overshadowed games, made by Bungie in its earlier years of coming greatness, it was loved by fans, but what ptobably kept it from getting bigger was lack of multiplayer support.

Turok Evolution....

I played through it. It was very intense, that is, once you got used to the sluggish controls. (took a few hours for me...) The main thing that I LOVED as well as HATED was the fact that when you die, you get pushed right back to the beginning of the stage, this created some very intense moments when I was low on health with 3 auto-shotgun wielding slegs...The flight missions were hard and annoying at times as well. The rockets have a very cool effect and the flamethrower is amazing. I suggest if you want a real challenge, to pick this game up, you can find it probably dirt cheap at ebay or amazon.

The only thing lacking, is the multiplayer. no xbox live or even system link option.

Oni was a golden nugget, but it had flaws and some boring graphics which got it average ratings in many reviews. The story and character development as well as the combat still make it very good.

Also, Shogo is a very nice anime-inspired game although the AI totally sucks and there are some weird ideas in it. It captures classic futuristic anime perfectly even if it seems clichéd.

made with the civ 2 engine, its great i still paly it every now and then cus it had literally infinite re-playability. and especially you can customize all your units. sure oyu had the common types of weapons and such. but some combos work great

speeder formers. shit tons more useful then the regular ones. shit can those chasis-type 1. get the roving.
cloak-drop units. BAD-ASS.
combine that with probe teams WITH ARMOR. evil pure evil.
yes probe teams with armor will win fights, cus those guys become elite quick with their missions

Dino Crisis 3: Despite it having THE WORST!!! camera system in gaming history It had beautiful Graphics a simple and easy to master combat system and some pritty decent AI at times (decent being that once one AI spotted you they all started to freaking swarm you).

If only Capcom had put more effort into the camera instead of ripping it from Res-Evil (its ok following a slow moving character like Jill on foot but not when your character is wearing a highspeed jetpack that allows for some extremely fast movements)

The first Turok game was eh, Turok 3 sucks, Rage Wars was very fun but also very pointless, and Evolutions was sloppy.

Turok 2 was a gem in a pile of crap, otherwise. I didn't like Goldeneye much (sorry, I know that's blasphemous) but I still can't say Turok 2 was better...I just liked it more and I was a lot more comfortable with the controls in multiplayer.

But that may be because I AM ADON.

I see they've got another Turok coming out, this time made by a different company, it looks fucking cool.

I'm not dissing goldeneye, but i played it after i played Turok 2, it just wasn't as good (in my opinion) though i never really tried out multiplayer, i think that's where goldeneye overshadowed turok 2.

edit: all this talk has got made me reorder the turok evolution for xbox...only paying $5.35 total for it (including shipping).

wow....Turok, that brings back fond N64 memories. Believ it or not, back when the N64 was new, this was the first game my dad bought me. So much for paying attention to violence warnings.

One game that I thought was overshadowed was Dropship: United Peace Force for the PS2. I never played the game, but PSM gave it a good rating. Dropship basically wasn't as popular as other games out there, but one Amazon.com reviewer said, "Why didn't I get this game sooner?"

Generally, it was game where you could both drive a tank and fly a jet; A rare combination that you see in video games.

I bought the PC version a while back, just to get the soundtrack. Amazon.com is the best place to buy used and new games for really cheap. my next purchase from there will probably be Jedi Outcast or Forces of Corruption.

Earth 2150: Lost Souls. created by Reality Pump This is quite frankly one of the most overshadowed RTS games ever, not only is it amazing to play but every single thing in the game is a 3D rendered model with units which can be customised with whatever equipment you want, with some decent texture quality(depending on how you set it) and they all animate... be it a turning turret or radar to a mechs walking animation

I only played Earth 2160, it made me upgrade my video card. But I have to admit, it was pretty good, the modular building system was something completly new as far as bases went. Rise of Legends used a similar system....but not quite as free.

Speaking of which, there's another game I enjoy that nobody talks about, Rise of Legends.

nah i think eaw/foc came out last year. i think. i enjoyed playing EAW, though it would be more fun if i had a decent video card, the star wars space battles rock.
