Okay, as gamers, we all come across games that really seem like they're worth buying, but when we finally start playing them, they suck.
Back when I played video games on the PS2, this happened to me with Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo. I was drawn to the game after seeing the advertisements in PSM. When I played it, I struggled like hell with the controls. For example, instead of using the left thumbstick to move, you have to use the old-fashioned D-pad.
The only thing that was good about the game was the anime cutscenes.
Overall, it seemed like a complete waste of time.
Has anyone else come across games that seemed good, but then turned out really crappy?
Star Wars Galaxies.
When I first was looking at it I thought it would be so cool because I had never played an MMO before and I loved how you could basically do whatever you wanted. But when I got it, it was a huge disappointment. I think I only played the 1 month free and then 1 more paid month before I quit.
mind my rant.
Halo.
I really really really dont see anything special about it.
And I'm not going on a tangent about Mircosoft either. its a FPS just like any other. sure there are plenty that I play that have special things that make the game fun. but I Just don't see it in Halo.
and what ticks me off the most is people. especially when they go 'OMG, Halo rocks! You're lame if you don't play Halo,... yarr, yarr, yarr...'
trust me. I find Halo... Slow
yup, slow. the game is too slow paced and the movement is so sluggish compared to other games, true that games like UT its impossible to spin 360 degrees and sniper shot someone with a t-gun. BUT STILL, i attempted such with Halo. Not a fun thing where I expect to be facing right behind myself but really i'm looking about just to the right. (yes with the setting CRACKED)
now that part is over. I can say, yes I've tryed the computer version. why?
wasd, and mouse.
cant use a controller to aim with at all. I'd rather look at the person and not their feet.
one more thing that pisses me off about controller players. You cant expect someone who is used to that sort of hand eye cordination to be able to switch right off., cant do it. yet i hear these freaks say that they are faster and more accurate. Bull....shit...
get me into a game of quake 1,2 AND 3, ut, HL DM, NS, CS. Let me have my keyboard and mouse, and let them configure their controller how every they want, ill beat em any... day... of.. the... week.
Go Scar you rox in FPS? XD
I havnt had any new games for a long time apart from Zelda: TP but thats not bad XD
These days if i was gonna buy a game id look on the internet about it or ask Lynk =P
Red Steel
I'm sorry, but Ubisoft has been pissing me off lately and Red Steel started it off. They say that they're not going to do the same asshattery that you see with EA, but then you do. With Red Steel you get a game which is CLEARLY unfinished and filled with bugs and glitches. I mean yeah, for a first generation motion sensing game it was fairly decent, IN THEORY. Now note that I'm not actually putting down the use of motion sensing, in terms of that I liked Red Steel, it had some very fun and interesting ways of using the Wiimote + Nunchaku... what I'm pissed off about is the fact that they didn't bother to take their time and perfect it all or iron out all of those damned bugs. They just said "let's make the cheapest game we can and fuck everyone over with it."

Final Fantasy VII
Biggest pile of over-rated junk I ever played. If you like the story, good for you. It wasn't to my liking. From a battle system stand point, it's nothing great, even for then. Music, like most Final Fantasy games, did happen to be good. Still, not a impressive game.
Another honorable mention would be Xenosaga: Episode 1.
yep, thats why i like FFVII so much. the story was great. i dont care if the graphics are old. but who cares, if its good dont fix it.
thats why i wont care if square never makes a remake for it
I liked Halo, my only frustration was the never ending repetitive maps
Military Intelligence are two contradictory words
FFVII wasn't a good game, it was a good movie. I felt that the gameplay itself was just slowing you down on the progression of the story itself.

you must like FF8 then?
uh didnt much care for Clone Wars on xbox. wasted $50 on that pile of steaming horse shit, same goes for battlefront (xbox version) it was fun until i tried sniping and i lagged. OFFLINE IN SINGLE PLAYER MODE. what in the fucking shit is that? it was 10x worse on xbox live.
SWG was alright UNTIL THEY KILLED BOUNTY HUNTING by enforcing GCW points/ranks on you in order to take down marks. pretty lame so i quit about 3 months ago. I don't miss it, i do miss my character though.
Scar da Kookee Wrote:you must like FF8 then? I personally don't like FF7 or 8 or really any other FF game. But like I said, I think that FF7 made a better movie than it did a game. It's the same deal with Killer7 really, the gameplay itself did get in the way of the actual story which was huge and complex. But to me, the fact that Suda51 and gang took a chance and did something wildly different makes me respect them greatly and like the game despite the actual gameplay becoming repetitive, etc.

ODDWORLD ADVENTURES 2
A sick, sad attempt to cash in what was a good franchise

Controlling an FPS with a joystick is quite difficult if you're used to mouse and keyboard; the only game I played with a joystick on the PS2 was SAC and it took me days to get it right. You need another tactic than on the PC; you can't directly aim at something with a stick unless you know exactly where your target is, and if the target moves, you need to re-aim which can be very hard with a stick, so what I did was aim at the target and then strafe with it to keep it in my focus. On the PC this is clearly unnecessary as you can strafe OUT of the target's shooting range while keeping the target in your crosshair with the precision aiming of the mouse.
Microsoft wants Xbox 360 and Vista gamers to play the same game together on the Internet. Guess who'll win the FPS games?
A bad game... Psychotoxic was disappointing especially after how much praise it got, but I doubt many non-Germans even know about this game. Halo isn't special at all, I agree with that notion, it's just another FPS with some nice maps and a nice story, but it's not revolutionary. Running back the whole game through all the maps which were already cleaned of the Covenant (and havong zombie aliens running at you) was totally boring. This made 50% of the game unenjoyable for me.

We stopped using the term "joystick" back in the early 90s lol. These days we refer to the analog control interface for videogame consoles as "analog sticks" or "control sticks"...
You are right though, it is a whole other world when switching from mouse and keyboard to analog sticks. And yeah, I agree that the dual analog stick method for FPS games isn't very good, though I say this out of personal experience using both control methods many times for various games, PC and console, in different gaming contexts.
I noticed you referred to SAC for the PS2. Now we are talking about FPS games here so using SAC as a reference is pretty useless, about as useless as me using Resident Evil 4 as an example. Furthermore, SAC's control mechanics weren't very good in the first place.
In any case, there is a learning curve to using dual analog sticks, though when you do get the hang of it you can perform complex maneuvers with great ease. You can strafe and keep the target in your cross-hairs on console FPS games, this was possible back in the days of the Nintendo 64 with GoldenEye, Turok, etc and it's true for the FPS games popping up on the PS3 and Xbox360. You can switch your cross-hairs between multiple targets with great speed and accuracy, get clear head shots, and more, all with great ease.
I know you can do all of that because I've done it. I acknowledge the dual analog control method isn't as good as mouse and keyboard, but I still do know what you can do with the method. You can do everything a mouse and keyboard can do, it's just performed differently on a control interface level and it's a lot harder to master.

Medal of Honor: Vanguard
Need I say more, it's Medal of Honor. It's bound the suck and this one wasn't any different. I have Call of Duty 3, and MoH:V makes COD3 look like it's the best WWII-based game out there. It was poorly done and in a hurry.

The game has good(not great, just good) replayability, and out of personal prefrence, I will always prefer to use the pad over the stick. Why? Well, aside from being mostly a computer gamer, I find too many games cram too many functions onto the stick.
Look up, look down, run foward, walk foward, crouch, fire tetriary weapon and so on. It makes it hard to do just one thing, like run away. hence I like the pad.
I found Star Wars: Empire at War to be teh suck. I liked the gameplay and I liked the graphics. But it felt underdeveloped. First: your using massive battleships on these inter-planetary maps filled with asteriods and nebulae. Which DO affect your ship, and they're a pain in the ass to navigate around. Secondly, the map vs ship scale was WAAAAY off, only on the like 4 player maps did I barely have enough room to have a good battle.
Then the ground missions, again, it felt underdeveloped. Base building was horribly lacking, the unit cap prevented me for utilizing the massive armies I'd constructed, and the fact that the rebels were the only faction with atmosphere combat units, ie: those annoying planes from The Empire Strikes Back, just really made me hate the game.
It had everything needed to be a great game, just somehow, LucasArts failed to put it together correctly. And after reminiscing about Homeworld 2 and it's trueish 3D space battles(up AND down as well as horizontal), the 2-dimensionalness of Empire At War is another inexcuseable problem.
