We know for sure that there won't be any of those awesome 80's songs in the movie. I'll admit, though, I loved Stan Bush's tracks from the original movie!

Maybe they'll bring back one of the old tracks and give it a modern remix?

The only way to make the live-acton Transformers movie work in terms of music is to make it entirely orchestrated. The 80s are long over, the kind of thing doesn't work any more. Putting in rock/pop tracks from today's age and/or remixed tracks of any kind will not work.

Have there been any movies that have made mistakes regarding music? What I mean is, have any movies used music at the wrong time or moment?

Well think about it this way, you have a movie about giant transforming robots from space coming to earth. Now think about that for a moment... seems pretty ridiculous doesn't it when you really do think about it. This is why orchestrated music has been used so well in movies like this. When you have a science fiction movie, it's best to use orchestrated music for those big action scenes and pivotal moments because the mass audience can appreciate it a lot more. Orchestrated music can produce a stronger emotional response compared to rock music when it comes to movies.

The problem with rock tracks is that it's more likely that a large part of that audience won't like the kind of music chosen and it'll take away from their viewing experience. Yeah, it's an action movie, but some of the best action movies used orchestrated music over the popular music of the time. Just look at Star Wars.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. I even own The Empire Strikes Back Original Soundtrack. The music in the battle scenes such as the Battle on Hoth is spectacular. Btw, may favorite music is the part when Luke brings down the AT-AT; an ass-kicking hit.

You also need to understand that George Lucas orchestrated his own music in a time where hip-hop music was dominating the market. What I'm saying is, if Lucas used real music tracks when he made Star Wars, there wouldn't be an "in a galaxy far, far away" sort of feel in the movie. It'd feel like this was taking place right here, on earth. And the Death Star would seem like a warehouse rather a battle station.

I've lost count with how many times you've posted something and you clearly have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. George Lucas didn't create the orchestrated music for Star Wars, John Williams did. George Lucas was trying to avoid the use of electronic music which was used heavily in other kinds of SciFi movies. Also, other movies at the time had disco music, hip-hop came later and it's use in movies came MUCH later.

Orchestrated music isn't used to convey an other worldly feel, it can be, but not exclusively for that purpose when it comes to SciFi. It is used to legitimise the genre. But in all honesty, I don't expect the live action Transformers movie to be completely orchestrated. I do expect to hear some kind of electronic music mixed in as well.

This mix of orchestrated and electronic has been done before, and done very well. If it came down to it, this is how I'd love to hear the movie because it mixes that oldskool 80s feel with a more timeless feel that orchestrated music can provide.

Those 80s rock tracks did work for the animated Transformers movie and we'll never forget them. The music and the movie itself is bloody awesome, but this new live action movie is taking the Transformers in a completely new direction and I don't believe that they'll be able to get away with trying to achieve the same result with today's rock music.

I really do hope they avoid putting in rock music. I really do. I don't have much faith that the movie will turn out THAT great in the first place though lol.

When I used the term, "hip-hop", I was using a word that a Star Wars documentary used to describe the music in the 70's when Star Wars was being made.

As for the Star Wars music, dammit, you're right! JOHN WILLIAMS. That name COMPLETELY slipped my mind. Maybe it's because I'm exhausted right now.

I know hip-hop was started in the early 70s but it wasn't exactly dominating, it was only just gearing up. I think the difference in thought there is that your source is using hindsight while I was talking about what Lucas and crew were worried about themselves in relation to their movie.

Also, it was Steven Spielberg who introduced John Williams to George Lucas since Steven and George were both friends at the time. They still are friends as far as I can tell.

The kind of music that was chosen for the animated Transformers movie was really a one in a million thing that could only be done at that time in the 80s. Fast forward to 2007 and it's pretty much impossible to achieve that kind of thing again.

Orchestrated, compared to rock music has a more timeless quality to it. It sounds traditional yet can have the force and ferocity to match the action and enhance the movie pretty damn well. I find that most of the time when people are watching a movie, they don't even realise they're listening to an orchestrated piece cause it just works so well with the action.

I've heard rock instruments placed in very well with orchestrated peices, they just where not the dominant part of the score. If any of you know of Toshihiko Sahashi, he does excelent use of orchestrated music with guitar incorporated in to the score, its an excelent example of guitar rock styles with orchestra dominated scores. (he did Gundam Seed series and FMP! series as well and soem others)

Amazingly though there is a reference about the film having an R rating in an early rough cut of the film, which I think would have been pretty neat, possibly putting giant robots in actual acceptable adult maturity appreciation of content rather than just a toy idea. Lucky though that Spielberg convinced otherwise for a PG-13 ratting.

Concercing the music on original score form the 1986 movie though, the selection of music that where in the score, weird al's contribution seems that it used the planet junk sequence where the autobots crash landed. I just downloaded it, and it seems the only thing logical it was used in.

Other songs used in the film where mostly pop songs, as well as even some music borrowed from an old commodore 64 game. I mean like lynk said, most songs in the 80s used in the film are a 1 in a 1,000,000 combination chance that it would sounf good at all, and if you happen to look back now, you wonder how the film actually carried on its own, with such a score with its edits and cuts to certain lyrics at all, and especially the taste.

But I would have to say, bringing 80s songs in to the movie would be terrible taste, no matter how hard the fanboys scream and shit-n-piss their pants.
Sure bring back some people that worked on it, but its not childhood nostalgia time, its time to wake up and face the fact that having megatron shrink to a gun and have to weilded is really the anti-thessis of a super villian, and optimus has problems finding his trailer when he transforms.

Orchestral works with some mixed use of mottif stylings would probably be the dominant soundtrack in this film, and just by the sound of teaser (the one with a transformer attacking the beagle rover on mars) its going to be that way.

On a final note, if you want something from the past, make a new rendition, becasue frankly "The Touch" sounds awfully comical, especially when the 80s rockbands where becoming comercialized (ie "We Built This City" ) at their declining peak.

That timeless quality explains why the soundtracks for movies like Star Wars, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Independence Day, and Back To The Future still sound as good today as they did when they came out.

Hell, some orchestrated movie themes become so popular that when you hear the first few notes of the songs, you are instantly able to recognize which movies they are from. For example, when you hear:

"dun...dun,dun...dun dun, dun dun."

You get that creepy, eerie sensation, "there's something in the water".
That's when you say, "Hey, that song is from the movie Jaws."

Well, when a song in a movie has lyrics, it tends to distract the audience from the movie itself, even if it is only background music.

Think back to the "recent" Godzilla movie, you know the one with Matthew Broderick. I feel that the Transformers movie will be treated like Godzilla in terms of how it's presented. Even worse is whenever I think about this connection I think of the image song they used for the movie by The Wallflowers which was playing just "casually" in a bar in the background... guh.

I have seen the sound tracks listing, doom and gloom is right the group HIM is on it, Also the band disturbed will be on it as well goo goo dolls as well. Out of all the bands in the soundtrack disturbed is the only one i like, so I'll be ignoring the music when i go to see it XD

Keep any singing for the end credits. Its off putting watching a movie and having a song sung as BGM. Dramatic orchestral music works better.

Ya know, it might only be an extra song in the Soundtrack, mainly the CD, so it may be some sort of bonus, because just looking around, I think this movie is going to take itself very seriously.
