After spending two weeks in Fiji, I'm back with many funny/strange/ah! stories to tell as well as some interesting facts and observations about my time in Fiji.
I've split this thread up into little sub sections so it's easier for people to read, especially for those who don't like reading uber long posts
I will be adding more to this thread over time. It's gonna take me awhile to write up all of this....
Born in Fiji
I was born in Fiji and I know how cool people think that is I spent my first 5 years there before I moved to Australia in December 1989, but I've always gone back to Fiji once in awhile... The first time I went back was in 1991... or 92, I forget XD and then again back in 2000 and then again in 2006. Of course it's not gonna end there, I'll be back there at least once before 2016, I've promised myself that I'll go back at least once every 10 years.
Not Just A Holiday
Two weeks is a long time to spend in a country, but 100% of that time wasn't spent just on holiday. The main reason why I went over was because my cousin was getting married. This was a rare moment, so a large amount of my family were heading over too, which is pretty cool cause we all got to hang out back in the country we were all born in... Except for my nephew who was born in New Zealand... the poor bastard XD
Portable Battery Operated Devices
Men as well as women love their portable battery operated devices... well maybe some women like theirs a lot more than they'd care to admit, but aaanywayz For two weeks I would be without anime and without the Internet. Which meant only one thing, I would definately have to take my Zen Touch and Nintendo DS with me. I even went out and bought Metroid Prime Pinball a day before I left. But anywayz, on the plane I happened to be playing Mario Kart DS in 1 player Battle mode. For those who don't know, in battle mode you start off with a balloon and you have to blow into the microphone of the DS to inflate more balloons. If you run out of balloons you're out of the battle. So, of course being on a plane, the amount of noise the jet engines make inflates the balloons for you XD No effort required lol.
It was a good thing I brought my Zen and DS along with me cause there were some pretty boring moments, like long plane/car rides... it was an even better idea to buy devices that had extremely long battery lives. I'm sure I would've been in trouble if I had an Ipod and a PSP instead XD
The Fiji Difference
As soon as you land in Fiji you have to remember, this is a very different place, where things happen a lot differently. For instance, you don't run by normal time in Fiji... you run by "Fiji time"... and no I don't mean the GMT difference...
Fiji Time
What I mean by Fiji time is that things run a lot slower in Fiji. There's no rush, it all just happens at its own pace. For example, if you order a drink down here in Australia, it'll arrive at your table right away. But if you order a drink in Fiji... it's gonna take its time whether you like it or not XD
Fiji Roads
But it doesn't end there, there are also Fiji roads... well more like dirt/gravel tracks than roads. After spending two weeks on these roads, Australian roads feel like you're gliding on a layer of sex... rwar.
Fiji Drivers
And to go with Fiji roads are the Fiji drivers. These reckless bastards do whatever they want, whenever they want. And the larger their vehicle the more reckless they are. And if you're driving a bus? Well then you're not gonna let anyone get in your way. During those two weeks in Fiji we had plenty of buses cut us off and plenty of other cars driving aggressively to get to whever the hell they're tryna get to.
There is another thing about Fiji drivers, they will go to any extremes to overtake another driver, even if there is a truck speeding down the opposite direction about to hit them. There were plenty of close calls but we never actually saw any live crashes.
Those Little Accidents
Seeing an actual crash or an aftermath of a crash for yourself is a very rare thing in most countries, but in Fiji you're bound to see at least one road accident once a week on your travels. In this 2006 visit to Fiji I saw a few aftermaths... and a truck that lost its trailer in the middle of the road. XD Last time in 2000 I saw another aftermath, I have no idea what exactly happened to this guys car but it was crumpled up at the front and he was stuck in the car cause he couldn't get his legs out... cause they were crushed XD ow...
And there was another moment I remember when I used to live in Fiji. My dad and I were sitting out in the front porch of our last house. We had a really good high view of this road down some residential street. So we see this car speeding down this road and next thing you know it's hit this other car that's reversing out a driveway. Man that was a hellova crash, the speeding car hit the other car in such a way that it jumped up a little bit.
XD Thw funny part is that to get any where in Fiji you kinda have to become one of those Fiji drivers or be doomed to being bullied and overtaken by every vehicle around you.
Strays
Fiji has a bit... XD a bit... a big problem with strays. Everywhere you go you will find stray cats and dogs... and sometimes horses. But the dog problem is the worst seeing as they're the more dangerous animsla out of the stray population. Some of them are vicious lil bastards. If you're in Fiji and you see any animals, don't try to be friendly with them as you would normally, just stay away from them and everything will be alright.
Pregnant Bitch
You really can't call the stays, "strays" anymore because the majority of the stray animal population in Fiji probably didn't have an owner to begin with and were born into the wild. It's kinda disgusting when you do come across a pregnant bitch though... especailly when you know it's probably close to starving and with a broken rear leg and is probably diseased... *shudders* unk.
Puppy Ated The Person!
XD One day, my dad, sis, bro and myself were off fishing. It was around 5am and we were on the beach waiting for this guy to get spare fuel for the boat. My bro went over to lay down on the beach. A few moments later my sister and I spotted a lil puppy wandering around looking for scraps of food and junk to eat. Eventually it stumbled upon my bro who was just laying there all still. So the puppy slowly crept upto him and started sniffing him to see if he was alive or not... to see if it was okay to eat him. XD Of course before that could happen I yelled out to my bro and he got up as soon as he saw this puppy standing over him XD The puppy fled. Eheheh... funny lil critters.
Nazi Dog Convention
I spent a couple of nights at an aunts place in Suva (capital city, place where I was born). I woke up in the middle of the night hearing the sounds of dogs barking, and it was pretty noisy seeing as most of those dogs were probably strays. Anywayz, I couldn't get back to sleep so I decided to listen to these dogs for a bit, and as I kept listening the barks became more orchestrated, and then the barks became howls and they were orchestrated too until every dog that I could possibly hear were howling all at once.
But that wasn't the scary part. Next after the howling stopped I heard a new dog, a dog I hadn't heard before. He must've been one hellova scary dog cause man was the bastard loud... he gave me the chills, it sounded that scary. It started off barking pretty softly at first, yet still sounding scary, and throughout, what I can only describe as a speech, it began to bark louder and more viciously... Which reminded me of how Hitler used to do his speeches. This dog was like Hitler reborn! It was a Nazi Dog Convention in Fiji o.o
Fishing!!
My dad made a deal with a few guys who worked at the resort we were staying at to take us out fishing on a boat. Anywayz, it was pretty fun. It was the first time that I had actually caught fish in my life... well apart from that other time years ago in Australia when were were heading back and I had snagged a lil tiny fish by its gill... I don't call that a catch XD Anywayz, this trip was cool cause I caught the most fish, I didn't bother to count but I did catch the most out of my dad, my sister and my brother. My bro did catch the biggest fish out of all of us though... well he caught it, threw up and went to sleep in the cabin cause he had a hang over from drinking the folowing night XD
It was cool watching how the guy who took us out on the boat killed the fish we caught which weren't edible but were going to be used for bate. He grabbed the part between their gills and did the fish equivelent of "breaking their neck." XD It was pretty cool.
Indian Ceremonies
Bleah, I'm sure all of you would be pretty fascinated by all the Indian ceremonies I went to because of my cousins wedding but I wasn't. My origins may lay with India but really... I don't care, I really don't. I have an Australian accent dammit XD Well anywayz, One thing you notice at any Indian ceremony is that everything is extremely colourful with all the sari's and what not. Take a few flowerpower pills and you're in groovy heaven XD Otherwise if you're like me and aren't really mesmerised by all the colours and the music sounds like noise to you, you'll be sitting somewhere out of the way with your two nieces and nephew who are also bored.
