I'm gonna keep this short.
If you see a spam thread, report it, but DO NOT be moronic and post in it.
You've read it! You can't unread it!

Ummm... Mr. Lynk, how will one be able to identify a spam thread?
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
1) Are we really who we think we are?
2) Is time really constant?
3) Is death really the end?
4) Can I kill you?
"Observe, the darling sweetness..."

Damn, I should have known!
I won't post next time. That is, if I can somehow find out if the thread is spam or not. :S
17 December 2006, 12:51 PM
Either private message darky and/or myself about the thread with a link to it, or click the ! mark shown on the red bar on the spam post or thread starter.
And it is pretty damn easy to figure out which posts are spam threads... the user has just joined, it's their first post and they're always trying to sell something... it actually isn't that hard.
You've read it! You can't unread it!

*raises hand* Imma moron!
Eni, spam threads usually sell those ... porno stuff.

17 December 2006, 10:02 PM

It's all your fault.
The reason I don't want people posting in spam threads is because it ends up being deleted from the database, along with your posts which creates a gap of sorts... it's very bad to have those once the database gets very large.

I don't know why they try posting things here, I bought into one of those enlarge your penis ads from a post a while ago and I still don't have a throbbing monster o' fun. False advertising is what it is.
18 December 2006, 12:21 AM
And I thought there was more the One Mod and One Admin? If Darky and Lynk are the only two what happen to the rest?

Lynk, they're not bots, are they? A lot of Invision Boards I'm at and even other type of boards have been getting hit by a lot of advertising bots lately.

so anyway, there's a way for filter them? I don't know how the bots get past the image verification, they use a sort of OCR now? or they aren't bots?
is really getting annoying now, we get more of those than new members.

They may be bots... I mean there is always a way to get by security, even those image verification thingies...
But on the other hand they could be people who get payed like 1 cent per forum that they post these things in or some crap like that...

Yeah, you can tell not all are bots since some of them have valid Yahoo email. Then there's bots with @[Enter site here] they're advertising for. Not sure, but bots use the same post icon. You know those icons you can selected from just people where you type messages.
24 December 2006, 9:20 AM
God damn Spammers, Lynks how do you banned them so fast, we're getting the same ones here now on Astrogate....

You're not the only one annoyed. Every time I see a new sign up now I straight away look up their address used to sign up and ban it if it's an obvious spam address.
I hate to say this but...Lynk I think you should turn off the new sign up option for the time being until you upgrade the forum and make an announcement on the site and inform other potential new sign ups that aren't spam bots.
25 December 2006, 7:38 AM
Just before i read Darkys post i thought the same thing in part XD
You could just stop sign ups although that has bad points to >_<

From what I'm hearing around the net, a lot of sites are getting hit more often by spambots, the frequency of these incidents is alarmingly high which means that traditional security practices have been mastered and overcome... which means nothing we do at the moment to prevent these bots from finding us. Even so, I still have 2 more updates to make to the forum, it's running 3.6.2 right now and should be running 3.6.4... i'll update the forum on the weekend.

Can you quote your sources of this information please?
I may want to take this to my other Forum leader....

Yeah, we were having the same prob at the game developer site I mod at. That's until the webmaster switched boards. Now its barely a trickle that get through (maybe 1 every 2 weeks). Which leads me to believe its just a real person manually doing it now instead of bots.
I get one or two daily or one or two every other day on the site I'm a part of the staff. I found we were getting hit by [Enter Word]@web.de before banned that email. Yeah, they able to break the security code you need to enter and email verification. Not limited to a certain type of board either. Invision and vBulletin been getting hit to my knowledge.

Its also easy to spot them by their usernames, some are just blatently obvious

This is so blatently a bot its pathetic
