That's the problem though, nothing Zidane could have done in that moment would have justified retaliation. I'm sure after years and years of playing, he's heard things just as bad if not worse.

Its sort of a tradition in American Football to "talk trash" with the opponent during a game. But everyone understands that talk is talk, and nothing stops talk faster than beating your opponent in the game, not beating him up for real.

the standard of talk is established yes, but that doesn't make it right. part of the reason why i think Materazzi must have said something truly outrageous and 250% inappropriate is the whole talk trash thing though. what zidane did wasn't right, but that doesn't mean Materazzi should get off the hook either. honestly, the italian team is just barely above the portuguese team in terms of sportsmanship (or lack thereof -_-).

Even if their reputation for diving is justified, that doesn't mean they have poor sportsmanship -- maybe what we should be thinking isn't that zidane should have been able to take the insults after 10+ years of experience, but that materazzi said something really nasty, or hadn't stopped the entire game. That to me spells poor sportsmanship more than the diving that every player in the entire world cup would perform in if they knew it would help their team to the biggest prize in sport.

essentially though, no matter how we argue, zidane still (i think) cost the french the game. and that is just incredibly disappointing and (again, i'd think) embarrassing for him. >_<

what I meant, is that italy was I think without question the dirtiest, least sportsmanlike team in that world cup, and probably in previous ones as well, and portugal doesn't deserve to even be compared with this.

Ok i watched what happened on the YouTube thing(Thanks Spectre). I dont even like football one bit but even I think that was just so bad, noone should play like that in any sport unless its specificly a no rules fighting sport =P

I don't really think rooney's stomp was intentional. Looking at it, it really looked like he was chasing the ball. I don't think even a yellow should have been awarded for that, and I'm pretty sure the red was given poorly, although a yellow at least should have been given for his pushing ronaldo twice

IMO, if it even looks like it *could* be intentional, a player should be awarded a "black, blue and purple" card from the opposing team, referee, fans, and anyone inside the three closest pubs to the stadium.

There's some things you just don't do as a player.

I'm soo glad the football is over. I mean I enjoyed the 1st football match because I managed to scrounge a couple of comics from them...
And watching everyone celebrate a goal that England didn't actually score was funny.. Especially when I pointed that fact out!
I must have been threatened about 20 odd times just saying certain teams were crap...

I'm sick of the sport... I HAD to watch the entire FA cup final because of work... I was sitting on the very top stand of the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, watching the game and the crowd. It was soo boring I actually nearly fell asleep... Thank sandwich I didn't, or I'd been fired!
