It was me and two other non nco's (private to lance corporal) who had just gotten there a month prior. About sixty to seventy drunk and under the influence people were marching down the street to the back gate right where we were. I stepped out to close the gate (it weighs about half a ton) when someone threw a bottle. It broke right in front of my face. Needles to say I reached for my pepper spray (and not the shotgun or baretta attached to my back and hip) and didn't even have time to unbotton my holster before some guy in a "nationalist japan" headband brought the bat to bear. He brought the bat above his head and I only had time to block it with my forearm. It broke both almost instantly and the force left over connected with my forehead and nose. I Kicked him as hard as I could and ran for the other side of the gate and pushed as hard as I could. The Japanese police and two more Marines showed up and the man was promptly arrested. I kinda just collapsed against the guard shack. That's all I remember until about four hours later, when I woke up in the base medical facility.
