Well I don't need to tell you why UMDs failed... but really, the smart thing to do is to get Bluray to the point where the density is so great that you could easily use 8cm discs instead of the normal 12cm discs as the standard. Doing so would give the format a chance to be easily played as a portable format as well as being for home viewing. None of this different formats for different products crap that has people frightened and confused. Flexibility is the key to get a good media format off the ground.

But of course, Bluray has already standardised itself to 12cm discs and that's not Sony's fault since they really have very little to do with the specifications of Bluray... just saying that if things were to go as smoothly as Sony would've wanted it all to go, that'd be the best way.

your forgot to mention that the memory stick put the final nail in the coffin for the UMD,all you gotta do is download and format it to MP4 and bam! playable on the psp. I like the UMDs better than doing that because if i'm in a hurry i dont have to fumble with memory sticks, just grab a few UMDs and i'm off.
