There are about 40 characters you can choose from but you only should only work on about 12 - 14 of them if you want to get a good amount of them promoted and at lv20. And Fire Emblem is just a tactics game, it's THE tactics game Stick Out Tongue

As for replay value, there are several unlockable trial maps and hard mode which I'm playing through now.
