Definitely, definitely, definitely go with food. Try a few places right around the area you end up in, little soba shops, beef bowls, or curry houses. If there's a coco ichibanya's stop there. Okonamiyaki is excellent as well. Make sure you find yourself in a sushi bar with a rotating conveyer belt. Visit a bar with at least one alchoholic drink and get merry until the japanese man next to you tries to grope your breasts. Explore, and don't be afraid to take pictures with people you think are kawaii. Cute rules here!
Visit at least one naughty store. Visit a one hundred yen store and buy something totally oddball. Go to a department store and buy a cell phone that plays movies, mp3's, and uplinks with a vending machine. Oh yeah, you have to buy something weird out of a vending machine. Vending machine culture in japan means you can get almost anything. Get a picture of you in front of a historic place, interesting landmark, or just plain weird/funny object/store/wherever.
Explore, explore, explore! Buy a traditional japanese fan and take part in a kabuki theatre reproduction. Find the most colourful kimono and try it on, but don't buy it. Walk up to a random person listening to an ipod/iriver/media player, and exchange headphones. The japanese always love hearing something quirky, so what you hear from them should always be interesting. Ask a person for directions in english and try to sort out in sign language where and what you want to do.
Wear the most revealing clothes you have and make a total stranger buy something for you (73|-| £\/!|_), Don't bother buying games or media, they won't work on your equipment due to region codes. Get a vodaphone. Buy porn. Go to a lawsons/7 eleven/family mart and buy a sandwich. Climb mount fuji. DOT DOT DOT... DOT DOT DOT... DOT DOT DOT... DOT DOT DOT... You can think of a whole bunch of stuff. Explore and feel free to experiment.
