It would be nice to see anime studios incorporate foreign languages into their subtitle options, but the interest isn't there since they are generally aiming their release at a Japanese audience despite the popularity of anime overseas.
I'd love to be able to see animes with English, German, Spanish, Tagalog subtitles, but it would prolong the DVD production time and studios want to release their DVDs as soon as possible. Which is why the idea of making digital media more flexable is a good one and is slowly being introduced into current and future media through different methods.
And you're absolutely right Mav, releasing Macross Zero without the foreign fans in mind is pretty damn crazy.
