Trying my best not to hand out spoilers, but wait for the second half of the series 
I don't much care for the ecchi harem moments (sorry, but Tate sucks. I couldn't read the manga because it's so Taters-centric) but I love what happens to the storyline as the series progresses. I also love the music in this series, from the happy genki tunes to the sadder piano pieces and the different battle songs, especially Dhuran Shoukan.
Shizuru and Natsuki are my fav characters: Shizuru because she's so laidback and manipulative in the first half of the series, yet in the second half.... and I love her accent; and Natsuki because no matter how hard she tries to be hardcore and kickass, she's not. Haruka is another character I like, because no one can beat the hilarity that ensues whenever Haruka loses her cool. There are so many good and/or fun characters in this series that it's hard to choose just one or two favs.
Like you, Eva, I don't really care that much about Mai. She's a nice person, blahblahblah, but she just doesn't interest me as much as some of the other lunatics on display (i.e. Midori)
