One of the biggest quality I thought Last Exile brought to the table was it's character development and how it divide the development among it's large number of characters and did it well, which many animes can't do. From Claus to Dio to Mullen, you get a different type of perspective from each character. From Claus, you get the perspective of a vanship pilot. With Dio, you get the perspective of a member of The Guild. With Mullen, you get the perspective of a solider. There's many more explains than just those three characters, but the point is that each character gives you something unique and what's better is that each character is cover and not just there.
