@ Analog: That brings up another good point. A LOT of money from anime sales outside of Japan go back to the Japanese companies. Not to mention the fact that Japanese companies own large parts of the US anime companies.
In fact, in recent years there have been more collaborations between Japan and the US and animes made with the international audience in mind. But then not all anime is made with the international audience in mind at all, so judging from how people react to the English version of those series, would they prefer it if they got the anime earlier with just the Japanese audio and English subtitles? I think I can safely say that that really is how most anime fans really do feel since for the most part, no matter what you do, you'll never satisfy them with an English dub.
I think a good example I could use for what I'm thinking of is Haruhi... even if the dub is decent, which it's not. Most people wouldn't want it in the first place, they'd just want be able to own a copy of it in the form that they're used to which is Japanese + English subtitles... assuming that they'd buy it in the first place.
