Birds are common around airports (all that greenspace gives them nice spots to nest, and also makes it easy for them to watch for predators), and as a consequence, a lot of money is invested in keeping them away. Many airports use propane cannons to scare them, and I know that around my area, there are both fake and real falcons to keep the birds away.
In fact, one of the concerns with the recent flight BA038 crash-landing was that it had sucked a flock of birds into the engines- apparently a large flock has settled in nearby and has been causing trouble. I do not know if this has been eliminated as a possible cause, however.
