You're right, the issue of copyright abuse is certainly on the agenda regarding this but it's not only that. It's also the problem of people being stupid enough to pay such a high amount for these types of unofficial works where the creator blatantly rips off other people's works. However, we're not sure if the buyer even knows about this so they could've possibly been conned into thinking they're getting an official painting.
Then again, are there any information of where the money will go? Was this auction for a charity or benefit cause?
EDIT: Just read the small line that all proceeds of the auction money will go to medical researching, so the artist who painted that isn't really getting the money and since it's for a supposedly good cause, it probably explains the high price.
