A lot more was changed from the initial US version, there were a lot of log entries that were updated. The log entries in the US version actually don't make that much sense, for example in the US version the Space Pirates breeched the barrier protecting the Impact Crater and had already encountered Metroid Prime. In the updated version, this was not so, the Pirates knew of Metroid Prime's existence as an entity within the Impact Crater, but hadn't encountered it.
But in the case of the narrator who only speaks at the very beginning and the very end. I liked it, and know a lot of Metroid fans who liked it. It fit the very mystical view of how the Chozo saw Samus. A lot of people who bought the initial release of Metroid Prime in the US are jealous that we have it and they don't.
But seeing as you don't like voices happening in Metroid, you're definately not going to like Metroid Prime 3 Corruption which features heavy voice acting by any character you come across. But don't worry, Samus remains mute, thank god.
Still I don't see how that narrator spoiled the fun, he was only at the start and end and when you transport to and from the Impact Crater, saying "Impact Crater" and "Tallon Overworld"
Oh and here's a bonus for ya Rach, a shot of Samus in Super Smash Bros Brawl
