@ Chim: VHS is a magnetic storage device, it degrades even while it's being stored. Any kind of magnetic force around it can damage it in some way, etc. A VHS could theoretically survive for many years, the video on it, unless stored in premium conditions will still survive for many years, but the quality of the video will drop significantly.
DVDs do have an expiry date too, but the quality of the video on the discs stays exactly the same unless the disc has been scratched deeply or something. But if it has been kept in good condition, the video will be the same quality you bought it in because it's stored digitally and not magnetically.
@ Mav: More studios are supporting Bluray and certain video outlets are choosing Bluray over HD-DVD.
