That goes for me too. I mean, during my childhood many of us watched some older anime series on local TV, but after a few years I distanced myself from them, actually developing a kind of aversion against anime until 2001 when I played that nice little computer game called ONI and I remembered what great stories anime has to offer. Since Mononoke had just come to German theaters at that time, this was the first anime I watched by intention, however GITS was the first I dragged home to watch it on my TV, and after that, the first anime I ever bought (on VHS). The franchise has ever since been one of my big favourites including SAC and Innocence, not to mention the original manga.
BGC (classic followed by 2040) came roughly one year later after I had seen Evangelion, El Hazard and some other stuff.
