the motherboard would detect it, and force the faster ram to be underclocked for compatiblity.
ram is made to be able to do that in these cases.
though sometimes it doesnt make sense because one can have fast ram but the front side bus only runs at a slower speed anyway, in which the ram has to go through anyway to be accessed. not directly to the cpu.
so really the ram is only effective at the rate of the front side bus
