Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about picking titles that are non-anime-fan-friendly. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to do that. Everyone has different tastes and what might be a great intro anime for one person will be a miss for another. Your best bet is to stick to the basics of reviewing "the good." Studio Ghibli is a great resource for that. Their movies are top notch as far as animation goes and their stories are imaginative, intelligent, and all ages appropriate.
