Speaking from experience with non-anime fans: FMA was aired locally with surprisingly decent dub, and some of my friends liked it. However, those who
barely watch anime were confused by FMA. They liked the fighting scenes, but the plot and philosophy was too 'complicated' for them. A good first anime would be something short, yet smart, and preferably should capture one's attention with its quality.
