This is the thread where you tell of your accidental discoveries of songs/bands/artists... I'll start.

Recently I've been playing a game called Killer7, I went on the net to find some Killer7 fansites and read through tonnes and tonnes of text analysing the plot of Killer7, etc, etc (it's one hellova trippy game lol)... anywayz, I started searching for mp3s of the soundtrack... I found it, I grabbed that one song I was looking for... but something else caught my eye.

It was the soundtrack to a different game by the same developer, Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. It's called "Flower, Sun and Rain." It's a PS2 exclusive game released by Grasshopper way before Killer7 and there happened to be one song on that soundtrack that featured singing. Curious, I downloaded that track called "F.S.R featuring Mia Murano" and you know what, it's damn good. I like it lol. I'm glad I stumbled upon it. According to the site I got it from, the lyrics were written by Suda51, the creative mind behind Killer7 and FSR.

Let's see... Well a lot of the music that are some of my favorites now I started listening to because I saw other people listening to them and just decided to check them out. A couple examples, when I went to Prime's website and say how big of a Beastie Boys fan he was, and I knew we had a lot of common interests, so I got a few albums and now they're one of my favorites. Another example is David Bowie. I had heard him before but I never really got any albums or anything, and when I saw that InsaneSith was listening to him a lot, and again we share many common interests, so I got an album and now I listen to him all the time.

There have been a few times when I tried this method and I didn't like the music, but I won't get into that :P

So most of the my accidental music was just checking out what others listened to.

word of mouth and curiosity are the two biggest factors in what ends up interesting me. i don't watch tv (for the most part) and i don't listen to the radio, so my exposure to new music is relatively slim. my friends, however, do both heavily, which means a lot of suggestions trickle down. after sifting through all the debris, i usually end up finding something new to enjoy.

soundtracks are a great way to find something else to get into...if it weren't for Fight Club, I never would have known that i *really* like the Dust Brothers...Rozen Maiden brought me Kukui and Ali Project (my current obsessions)...Magnolia brought me Aimee Mann...Powaqqatsi gave me Philip Glass...the list is near endless. in a way i guess this does prove that video killed the radio star

i usually regret it when my musical taste turns stagnant and i end up retreading the same ground endlessly...it also affects my ability and desire to write and play music, which is very important to me...so when that stops being fun, i know it's time to start paying attention to outside influences again, and i start looking =)

I find out about alot of music like moelman does, recommendations are very important considering how bad the radio is here.

But I'll occasionally find something I like on my own, m.o.v.e. is a group like that. They did a few theme songs for Initial D, and I fell in love with their music. They blend alot of different genres together and it ends up sounding really nice.

Another group I recently found out about is Sonata Arctica... which oddly happened while I was searching CD Japan for some anime OST's. It's surprising how popular Progessive Metal is in Japan.

I get my friends to send me random songs over the net, just totally random stuff. Sometimes when I get a song I like I get them to send over more of the same

most of my music discoveries are "accidental" in that I'll suddenly hear a song I like randomly throughout the day, and immediately know that I'll have to get it. Examples of favourites obtained this way include "A million ways to be cruel" by OK Go, "Way to fall" by starsailor (ending to metal gear solid), and one more I was going to mention but forgot the name of en route...oops.

Normally my friends and I swap random songs over the net, to see what we like and get one another interested. Mainly I encounter songs that I like, in films or other contexts, or just on random surfs (have no idea how I discovered Gigi Leung, for example) Currently on a Mika Nakashime/Yuna Ito kick thanks to their songs in the Nana live action music, with a side serving of Anna Tsuchiya for variety.

Here's another accidental discovery... I have no idea how long I've had this on my hard drive or where it came from, I must've downloaded it by accident or something... I haven't seen this anime, but Aishiteruze Baby - Sunny Side Up is a very nice song.

never played the game but I LOVE the usic.

I downloaded the OST thinking it was the OST of FF9 (they made a error in the link heh)

Never regretted it, some of those tracks are REALLY relaxing.

Recently discovered an old band in the electronic/ambience genre from 2002 (though they split in 2003) called Frou Frou. Really liked their song "Must Be Dreaming". Discovered this through watching a hugely popular RahXephon AMV on youtube called "Euphoria", the #1 ranked AMV on amv.org (you gotta check that out if you haven't already).

Frou Frou's album "Details" is suprisingly good, I liked a lot of the tracks on there like "Hear Me Out", "Shh" and "The Dumbing Down Of Love" and it's kinda surprising I'm into their music from the electronic/ambient music genre since I usually find this type of music hard to listen to for a long time.

There's only one thing I find kinda strange about Frou Frou, the female singer Imogen Heap really sounds like a man singing XD, I originally thought it was a guy singing when I heard "Must Be Dreaming" for the first time but was surprised to find it was a woman. I don't know if this means Imogen Heap is a transvestite or not and I don't even wanna go there though I've heard there are female singers who can sing in their low register keys lol, I think I'll just stick to the music XD.

OOH! Hey darky, If you like Frou Frou, try a band called Goldfrap, or another called Royksopp. Fc Kahuna is another downtempo electronic group too.
I've been doing some exploring and found this really awesome breakbeat duo called NAPT. Their stuff is so... upbeat? for that particular genre.

(planet earth)...was listening to the radio on a friday night and they were playing harder stuff than they usually play, and all of a sudden i hear the firehouse siren and the song 'represent' by hed pe starts playing, i had a heck of a time looking for it online when i got home, as i forgot the band name and the name of the song, but i somehow remembered the name of the cd, only in amerika. but i kept typing 'only in america' ..

definitely music i can't play when parents are around though, but it has that edge that you just don't hear in the new bands that keep popping up on the radio.

I don't know really. This canadian singer named Gordon Lightfoot, does some pretty neat songs that are not at all the hilbily cowpoke type themes.

Although, when I was younger I did discover that I liked Little Richard, after watching "Brave Little Toaster" about 50 times over. Tutti Fruity!

i came accross some AMV`s given to me by a friend, and as i watched some of them, i came across multiple of tehm i quite enjoyed a smaller portion of them where in german but they were still quite good. i discovered from that friend later on that one of them was E Nome, and the rest belonged to a band called Rammstein. ive been slowly as i remember getting a hold of a few of theyre songs, and have been enjoying most of them

Accidental discovery: Arashi

I used to like w-inds, and would watch the MV's even though I had no idea what they were saying. One time, I saw this boyband and I kinda liked them (I don't really like boybands, except for the Korean ones)... it turns out years later that they've become uber famous. And my fave is in Gokusen too XD

Literally just discovered that the nice, mellow pipe that I love so much is the Armenian duduk. Combine its honeyed tones with its maestro, Djivan Gasparyan, and I think I'm going to exchange some hard-earned cash for some CDs.
