Just watched an anime movie on TV called the Norse Prince by Isao Takahata. This was old 1968 in fact, think Astro Boy or Speed Racer and that is what the animation was like, the story was alright, watching it was like a bit of anime history.
It got me thinking just how much animation has changed with the advent of technology, in a good way of course. The recent remake of Appleseed for example was brilliant. And of course series like FMA, Last Exile, Peacemaker and Cowboy Bepop in the last decade or so
I think any good anime, despite its age, does have a timeless quality to it. Original BGC, AD Police, Project A-ko, GITS, Dominion Tank Police just to name a few. The sort of things you can watch again and again, and not get bored with.
Just my musings on the subject, what does anyone else think?

I remember Speed Racer, but I keep forgetting that was the first anime I saw XD
I'm a fan of shounen action anime, so I consider Yaiba and YuYu Hakusho as "good" anime, and I can watch them over and over again without getting bored. I also still enjoy watching the original GitS, despite the current popular opinion.
I've seen a lot of older anime, unfortunately, I don't like most of them because they were usually either drama, kiddie or mecha >.<

Ive seen Astro Boy
Astro Boy is fun, I have the 1980's re- release on video tape, still watch it too
@Kyubichan....'original GitS, despite the current popular opinion'. Are people actualy saying its not good! No accounting for bad taste is there?
Its gotta be one of the best anime made and without it we wouldn't have new GITS series and movies
i think she means that its popularity hasnt ruined it for her

the orignal GitS movie got me hooked into anime. It also lead the way for more serioius anime to come to the US since it did pretty well as a movie I'd say its an Iconic masterpiece that deserves to be in the moive hall of fame...
anime has come a long way, a while ago I saw some black and white anime on Cartoon network early sunday morning, it was pretty funny it was set all the way into the future in 2000 lol

Hmmm... Akazukin Chacha? I loved that show!
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
1) Are we really who we think we are?
2) Is time really constant?
3) Is death really the end?
4) Can I kill you?

Aahw, Eni, that's so cute! ^^
@Flynt: Yeah, I've been to a whole lot of forums. Most people are saying the original GitS was boring, crappy and whatnot, and that it doesn't deserve that award thing because it's not as good as people think it is... I've seen the movie, my 'brother' even gave me his original VCD! Although I do think SAC 2nd Gig looks better, the original was awesome and I watch it over and over again.

Was thinking more of the lines that they should be shot
I fear a day when anime becomes so standardised that it all just seems like the same old recycled crap... and to be honest it's getting to that stage pretty quickly.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
^ Lynk, i think that it has gone to this stage already.
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
it's like modern day soaps...

They said that?! Methinks they wouldn't know a good anime if it came up and bit them on the arse.
@Lynk , Sadi.... yeah some anime maybe in danger of becoming generic, but there will still always be good stuff out the to see.
One I've seen recently is Ergo Proxy, dark and very interesting
*LOL at Lynk's sig*

Do people in here still think Akira is overrated? I asked cause I was watching it awhile ago and I got that same feeling I get when I watch Ghost in the Shell. It's a classic that'll never die and should always be remembered.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
Reminds me of this top 50 anime list or something by this guy i found XD
I laughed at it Evangelion was like 48th and Naruto was top and Sailor Moon was 2nd XD
Noticed some other things he put Kenshin series way above Trust and Betrayal then hes put Macross Plus in but not any other Macross series lol
Well click here to see it, its just XD
Lynk Former Wrote:Do people in here still think Akira is overrated?
Akira isn't one of my favourite animes, I can take it or leave it. I never could seem to get my head around it, and I have seen it more than once. But thats just me.
It deserves to be called a classic because it's one of the shows that helped bring anime to the the world outside of Japan
...Am I the only one who actually got Akira?... I mean it wasn't that beyond what Ghost in the Shell was showing us. I thought they explained the premise pretty well... at least they went back and gave Akira a well deserved revised dub which is a billion times better than the original or the dub for GitS for that matter.
x.x I really don't understand why people think it's overrated.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
Nowadays, people tend to compare older anime to newer ones. Some give older anime "low" ratings, say their overrated, blah blah. It's like their minds are set on the new generation, and don't take time to consider the setting and conditions that the older ones were made in.
I can't comment on Akira since I haven't seen it, and I'm not such a fan of mecha/cyber stuff (except GitS). I won't go around saying it's overrated or otherwise unless I see it.

When i first say Akira, i was... six years old, or close to that.
But anyway =p
Akira and the GITS 1st movie won't enter the 'generic' line coz they're the precisous girls in the eyes of many directors. Come on, you can tell easily the movies that had their ideas turned to these two great movies (great in all meanings, story and production) and the whole group of directors who try to honor or to simply imitate the Akira/Gits style (from art to direction).
Matrix is the best example ever! Even the camera shots are the one and the same.
And i don't think of Akira and Gits as plain simple Anime movies. They're movies like every other else. What gives me the creeps is when all those classic newspaper people rate those movies as something kid like just because is made of cel. animation! Or 3d or whatever that fits into the animation camp.
Geez -_-'
I believe that the world will colapse when Disney sets a movie fully for adult watchers.

first time i saw Akira was during a LAN w/ Cracken XD
edit: Yes lynk, i went to a couple of LAN's with the freak, and survived.
I miss those.

That whole attitude pisses me off, people thinking that an Anime is for kids just because its animated is ridiclulous... sit them down and show them something like Ninja scroll or some other 18 ® rated anime then let them think its still for kids (I know there are much better examples but I cant think of any right now)

now that i noticed my typo in precious hahah XD
but really, disney is the example for all the market for them. But if you look back to all those disney 2d movies, there are plenty of things that are not for kids to notice. Very clever, should i say.

Rach Wrote:I believe that the world will colapse when Disney sets a movie fully for adult watchers.
Didn't they already try that with some ghost/haunted house movie starring Eddie Murphy? I remember I saw a trailer for it years ago when I was with my friends watching some other film.
Disney owns Touchstone Pictures which has made many adult oriented movies.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
Shrek has adult type things in it XD
darktruth, i saw that movie. but still, doesn't appeal to me like something that kid wouldn't watch. Besides, it's live action, not animation
And Lynk, the movies are under Touchstone Pictures and all goes to the oriental market. Not under Disney's own name and the north-american market. That makes a huge diference.
Hey! Are you paying attention to class?
Um, Rach, no. the movies by Touchstone Pictures is released worldwide, at least in western countries as far as I know. They are released in North America as well as down here in Australia. Furthermore, everyone knows Disney owns Touchstone, they know because back in 86 they released an R rated movie which caused a lot of fuss. They've been releasing all kinds of movies till then and have proudly said that they're under the Disney name.
A lot of the larger corporations work this way, they won't bundle all of their products under the one name because you can make more money when you package your different products under different names.
But I gotta say, weren't you saying that there is no difference between live action and animation before? XD I mean that's how I feel but you seemed to have taken a backflip with your last post.
You've read it! You can't unread it!
Also if one seperate company goes bankrupt the main one dosnt =P
Maybe Rach was just stating the fact XD
It's not a separate company though, it is one of Disneys key assets, if Disney goes, Touchstone goes, unless it's sold to someone else to pay the debt, whatever that may be. Think of it this way, if Disney had to, they could sell Mickey Mouse to stay afloat.

Here's the one your thinking of Lynk:
Ruthless People
I remember the fuss when it came out, but I really liked the movie. Pretty funny. XD
And back on topic, I actually tend to think that some older anime is being badly dated by the current methods of computer animation. I mean, I really liked some of the older BGC fight scenes and other anime series from the late 80's, but it really doesn't stand up to the level of detail available to current animators, IMO.
