SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- Dell, the world's largest personal computer maker, said on Monday it would recall 4.1 million notebook computer batteries with cells made by Sony, the largest recall in Dell's history.

Dell said it issued the recall in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission because the devices' lithium-ion batteries could overheat and, in rare cases, produce smoke and catch fire, Dell spokesman Jess Blackburn said.

The recall of batteries in Dell notebooks sold from April 2004 through last month spans the company's assortment of Latitude, Inspiron and Precision models, Blackburn reported.

Blackburn also said that the recall would have no "material impact" on Round Rock, Tex.-based Dell. Officials from Sony (Charts) Energy Devices Corp. of Japan, which made the cells, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The recall involves 18 percent of Dell's 22 million notebook computers sold during the period from April 2004 to July 2006. It comes three days before Dell is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings.

Dell has received six reports of batteries overheating, causing damage to furniture and personal belongings, the Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington reported. No injuries have been reported, the commission said.

I don't suppose its a coincidence that I've had to add padding underneath my LT recently to keep from burning my legs... XP

You know, not less then four months ago my ac power adapter got really hot and melted the casing, fusing it with a two by four inch patch in my carpet. I thought that it was strange, especially considering I hadn't had the damn thing for more then a month yet, so I just ordered another compatible one. Now that I read this I'm about to send an angry letter...

I saw a photo in the newspaper of a laptop bursting into flames at a Japanese convention, I just really glad I brought a Cooling stand for my laptop now as well as buying that new power transformer at the last computer fair to replace that dodge one the computer repair shop gave me...

Ouch! Sounds like other people have had issues with the "demon laptops" too. Turns out I had one of the bad batteries in the recall... but it wasn't the one I've used for the last few months. Lucky me. :P

I still get a new battery replacement which is nice. I just hope there aren't any other 'hot' issues hidden in the LT somewhere. I might just start putting it in standby whenever I'm not using it at work and home from now on just to be safe...
