I've been so out of date with the video gaming world that I was surprised to find that modding your PS2 so you can play games sold outside of Australia is legal down here. This was ruled by the High Australian Federal court back in 2005 between a 4 year long battle between Sony and a small business man named Eddy Stevens.
I'm sure this will raise some boiling blood regarding the whole moral issues as it makes it much easier to sell pirated video games, however, the benefit of being able to play games that will never make it to the western world sounds very tempting. What do you think? Will this ruling end up helping or harming the game industry down here in Australia?
Personally, I had been thinking of buying a Japanese PS2 model just so I could finally play those games based off a few anime series I've liked, but finding out that the PS2 mod-chips are now legal in Australia, it sounds very tempting to just buy a local model and not have to worry about the different TV systems and power supply. Of course, there are always those who will take advantage of this rule to pirate games and sell them on the black market but there are those who would use this to legally buy games sold outside of Australia and finally be able to play them.
